The schedule has now been released and we’re just four weeks away from football season. The Hoosiers kick off the 2020 season at Camp Randall Stadium against the Wisconsin Badgers. Today, we’ll highlight incoming freshman athlete wearing the number 21 jersey, Javon Swinton.
Javon Swinton (Freshman)
Hometown: Stafford, Virginia
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 170 Pounds
Position: Athlete
Tom Allen and his staff plucked a versatile athlete out of ACC country when they secured the commitment of Javon Swinton to the Hoosiers. A two-sport athlete in high school, Swinton averaged 27 points per game on the hardwood while earning a basketball scholarship offer from Hampton University. The speedy athlete ultimately chose football and picked Indiana over offers from South Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, among other mid-major programs.
Swinton played both wide receiver and cornerback at North Stafford High School. He posted 48 catches for 858 yards and 13 touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball while adding 46 tackles and two interceptions from the defensive secondary. His performance earned him a 3-star ranking and the 20th best athlete prospect by Rivals.
For the 2020 season, much of Swinton’s time will be spent focusing on adding weight to his frame. The position he’ll play is still somewhat to be determined; he’s still listed as an athlete at the moment and will likely play a similar role as David Ellis or Reese Taylor, fitting in where he is needed. Fortunately, this was appealing to him when being recruited.
“They told me that when I go down there, I’m just an athlete. Wherever I can get the most reps on the depth chart,” said Swinton to The Freelance Star.
This may mean that a redshirt year is likely for 2020, but Swinton will be ready to make an impact on either side of the ball later in his career.
