Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Xavier High School)

Having players that come from winning and respected high school programs is a valuable tenet of most successful college teams. Building your program with players that know what it takes to win consistently and are used to winning can help mold the culture necessary to be a successful college football squad. St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati would certainly qualify as a respected and winning high school program. In fact, “St. X” would be considered one of the best high school programs in the Midwest over the past several decades. During his time with St. Xavier, Dominic Altimari won back-to-back conference championships in 2014 and 2015 and then won a state championship in 2016. Altimari came to Bloomington in 2017 after being a part of the winning culture at St. Xavier and joined the IU program as a walk-on during the season. He redshirted and worked as a scout team offensive tackle and actually won scout team player of the week in preparation for the Georgia Southern game.

Altimari has the size and frame to be a very good college offensive tackle. At 6’4” and already more than 320 pounds, he is one of the larger guys on the team. It’s rare for walk-ons to become starting offensive linemen. While it is in the realm of possibility for Altimari to turn into an in-game contributor along the offensive line, it is more likely that he serves as a valuable scout team player. Having a walk-on with his size and experience in a winning high school program is a rarity and one that could provide large benefits on the practice field. He’s just now entering his redshirt freshman season so the Hoosiers have several more seasons to develop and work with Altimari and potentially turn him into a huge body that provides quality depth at tackle.
