Countdown to Kickoff: #19 – Courtney Roby

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 190 pounds

Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (North Central)

Class/Position: Legacy Hoosier/Wide Receiver

The Hoosiers have had some great receivers over time and one name seems to get over looked too much, Courtney Roby. Roby played for the Hoosiers from 2001-2004 and while the Hoosiers didn’t have that much success on the field, he had an outstanding career. The Indianapolis native left IU as the school leader in career receptions (170) and career yards (2,524). Roby is currently fourth and second all-time in those categories to date.

After his record-setting career at IU, Roby was selected in the third round (68th pick overall) by the Tennessee Titans. In his rookie season Roby was a contributor as he made 21 catches for 289 yards and a touchdown. He also returned 22 kickoffs for 495 yards. After his rookie season in 2005, Roby spent one more season with the Titans before bouncing around the league with short stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals before finding a home with the New Orleans Saints in 2008.

He became a key special teams contributor for the Saints as he returned 19 kicks for 472 yards and a score in just five games in 2008. The next two seasons saw Roby become one of the best kick returners in the league as he returned 75 total kicks for 1,939 yards and a touchdown in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Roby won a Super Bowl with the Saints along with fellow former Hoosier Tracy Porter in the 2009 season.

Roby’s career would end due to injuries as he was cut by the Atlanta Falcons in 2014. He finished his NFL career with 26 career receptions for 343 yards and 3,007 kickoff return yards. He also added 46 tackles and two fumble recoveries.
