Countdown to Kickoff: #16 – David Felton
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 221 pounds
Hometown: Evansville, IN (Evansville Harrison High School)
Class/Position: Redshirt Freshman/Wide Receiver
The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff rolls on and we are now just over two weeks until the beginning of the 2018 season. The Hoosiers will take on Florida International in Miami and I am more than ready for some IU football! However, we still have 16 days to get through and today’s countdown piece focuses on a walk-on wide receiver from Evansville, David Felton.
While the Indiana Hoosiers have quite a bit of talent at wide receiver and it seems unlikely they’ll need to rely on a walk-on at the position but it would not be a shock if Felton, a former quarterback from Evansville, works his way into the rotation during his career in Bloomington. After all, he had plenty of interest from FBS schools and certainly could have played as a likely starter at the FCS level. Felton threw for 1,281 yards with 14 passing touchdowns and added more than 1,100 yards with 11 rushing touchdowns. He is a terrific athlete, earning three letters in football, four in track and field and two on the basketball court for Evansville Harrison High School.
Top wide receivers Nick Westbrook and Donavan Hale were limited during spring practice due to injuries they suffered during the 2017 season. It’s never ideal to have guys not practicing but the silver lining is that players like David Felton were able to get additional reps and show what they are capable of. Felton is very quick and his accomplishments in high school prove he is an FBS-level athlete. He’s certainly going to be behind Westbrook, Hale, Luke Timian, Whop Philyor and J-Shun Harris. I imagine freshmen Miles Marshall and Jacolby Hewitt will also be ahead of him (although they’ll both be candidates to redshirt after four games, depending on how they perform and the health of the group). Felton will compete with fellow walk-ons Chris Gajcak, Justin Berry and Jack Moran (a really strong group of walk-ons for one position) for snaps and try to position themselves for future roles.
The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff continues each and every day so be sure to check back often for the latest profile piece!
