Countdown to Kickoff: # – James Head Jr.
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 248 pounds
Hometown: Miami, Florida (Southridge)
Class/Position: Freshman/Defensive Line
James Head Jr. will be a very important piece of the puzzle for Tom Allen and the IU defense. The talented defensive end stands 6-foot-5 weighing 248-pounds. Head Jr. played at Southridge High School in Miami, Florida where he had a decorated career that culminated in a 2016 Class 8A state championship. At the time of his commitment, Head was ranked as among the top-25 strong-side defensive ends in the country by 247Sports. Head fielded scholarship offers from a plethora of programs including Baylor, Michigan State, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Iowa State and more. Ultimately, the family atmosphere won him over and Head decided Bloomington was the place to be.
Head enrolled in spring classes this year, so he’s spent more time with the team than the average freshman. Given his talent and sheer size, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Head play a decent amount in 2018 and possibly provide the defensive front some much needed depth. Hopefully the Hoosiers defense can stay healthy and they won’t be put in a position where Head will be heavily relied upon as a true freshman. However, Head has added muscle to his frame as he’s had several months under the direction of IU’s new strength and conditioning team comprised of David Ballou and Dr. Matt Rhea. He will undoubtedly see his fair share of snaps rotating in and out of the defensive line. Don’t be surprised if James Head Jr. evolves into a serious weapon for the Hoosier defense.
