The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to IUFB Kickoff continues as we hit 65 days until IU’s kicks off the 2022 season against the Illinois Fighting Illini. Today we look at incoming freshman offensive lineman Carter Smith.
Carter Smith (Freshman)
Hometown: Powell, Ohio
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 280 Pounds
Position: Offensive Line

Carter Smith was ranked as the 18th best player in Ohio by the recruiting services and was an early enrollee for the Hoosiers, which could give him a leg up on getting into the rotation. Smith was an outstanding lineman for Olentangy Liberty H.S. where he earned all-state and all-conference honors as a junior. He also lettered in volleyball meaning his athleticism should be very good.
“Really, really love this young man, as far as just so much potential, long and athletic.” Head coach Tom Allen said on Signing Day. “(He) played high school men's volleyball for his high school team. Another rare thing to have offensive linemen playing that sport, but his athleticism showed doing that, and he's long and lean and going to keep getting bigger. Being 280 already, as thin as he is, he's got great upside to be able to grow and develop.”
With Smith needing to fill out a little more, we will see what he’s listed at when the fall camp measurables come out, he is a solid candidate to redshirt and maybe get some mop up duty in a few games in 2022. However, Smith should be a major factor into the future of this offensive line.
