@jdb I’m home today bc my minion doesn’t have school. We’re dying. There’s nothing to do. We’ve done it all
My kids have been off since late May and aren't going back until after Labor Day. I look like a mix between an alcoholic and a heroin user.
19, almost 20 year old daughter goes back to Purdue in 5 days. Not that the wife and I are counting or anything.
Btw, you think you got it bad now. Just wait til they think they're grown. This summer has been eye opening. "I'm an adult, you can't tell me what to do". Why did I quit drinking. Goddammit.
You're going from a larger metro area to a smaller metro area to play teams. Now that's dumber than shit. Course, central Indiana does the same nonsense but at least they built GRand Park so everybody just come here now. There's like 5 or 6 really good programs in central IN all less than an hour from each other, yet they all will travel out of state at levels BELOW ECNL. Total rubbish money grab bullshit.
A coworker is driving from the northern Chitown burbs to Bettendorf for baseball at that TDK complex. Seems like it's 2-3 times/month. I gotta think it's even more dense up there.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan. POTFB
@jdb mls nxt Ecnl and on and are ridiculous. It’s a money grab. If you live in a decent sized city there is absolutely no reason to travel. None. when I played you got one trip a year. Holidome. Pizza Hut. Fabulous.
now these parents are expected to travel every other weekend! Nationals for ten days. 11 month season.
I was asked to go out for wrestling as a HS Freshman based on what I'd shown the coach in 8th grade and freshman PE. (I was a small but stout farm kid with crazy leg strength.) I did well in a couple practices and was going to be on the varsity but had to give it up because the transportation after practice was too much of a hassle for my folks. Scarred for life.
@unclemark we have a guy in our soccer crew here who is tiny. Like maybe 5’5. And not thick. Just a tiny guy. He led like naia or d2 or some shit in scoring back in the day. He always said he was a “great” high school wrestler. I bet he was 5’5 or 5’4 140. Anyway we were playing in a tournament. Indoor. Against a bunch of hackers. Neil rackers was on the other team. Old nfl kicker. As long as I live I’ll never forget it. This guy. 6’3 ish hacked the fuck out of him. They both got up jawing and the bigger started laughing and put his finger on his forehead.my buddy did one of those shoot double leg takedowns and before you could blink he was on top of this guy. There’s nothing like wrestling

Wrestled for two years until I shifted to swimming. No sweaty armpits in the face in that sport! I was undefeated in matches except in intrasquad matches when I wrestled my buddy who was very, very good. He won by pin in most matches state-wide and was offered a scholarship to Iowa State. Instead, he got married the summer after graduation. He gained a good 50 pounds after graduation and before the wedding. The marriage didn't last. Imagine that.
By the way, swimming is a harder sport physically. Really great conditioning.
As for transportation, I usually rode my bike to practice (both sports) or got a ride. We had a team bus for meets.
@unclemark damn varsity as a frosh in wrestling! You were strong. I wish I would have wrestled. I’m going to try to get my minion to do it.
Bro, if it's anything like it used to be back in the day, do it. We were on the road every weekend for several months with my 2 sons doing the Indiana AAU circuit with a Indianapolis team out of Warren Township in the mid 90's. It was a blast! Oldest son was competitive but the youngest was a beast. He was 5 or 6 when we started (Pee Wee 40lb weight class lol). He medaled virtually every meet but one towards the end of the season @ New Castle High School gym. He was wrecking it until one kid he was dominating (had his head and one arm locked down on the mat and about to pin him) decided to spit out his mouth guard and bite a plug out of my son's forearm (drew blood). He was done for a minute after that. But a few weeks later back at it and qualified for the State Tourney @ the fairgrounds an took 3rd in state. He did it again for a bit the following year but his heart wasn't in it, so I didn't force it.
