Trump remarks that Republicans should 'take over' voting

"Speaking to Dan Bongino, who recently left his role as deputy director at the FBI, Trump said he felt voting was corrupt in the U.S. and power needed to be taken away from the states, seemingly seeking to go against the Constitution. ''The Republicans should say: We want to take over. We should take over the voting in at least 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”

Of course that would be illegal and unconstitutional but this messaging, by itself, is destructive.  Trump keeps repeating the bald-faced lie that there is widespread fraud in US elections.  If he continues to undermine faith in the voting process, we are done as a representative democracy.  Done.  Full stop.  And the longer he keeps talking this way, the more convinced I am that he (and/or his closest and most influential advisers and confidantes like Stephen Miller) actually wants that outcome.

@big-ryan He’s right. And it’s not illegal if limited to Federal.  Nationalize it, as in other countries, get professional administrators not partisans, and fund it.  Only eligible voters vote and we get a correct count.   The patchwork method is silly.  It would instill voter confidence and both parties would benefit.

We are done if our elections are not secure.

Which makes me wonder why we cut various teams dedicated to election security. If foreign governments break into computer systems and alter voter rolls, break into tabulation systems, etc, what does this mean for elections?

Safe to say you are for reinstating this & requiring voter id to have the most secure elections?  I am.  What about you, or is this just a partisan wuttabout post?

There is no credible evidence of widespread voter fraud or rigged elections.

Trump's insane, partisan proposal is a solution in search of a problem.  It's based on an utterly false premise, it's unconstitutional and it's recklessly irresponsible and harmful.

@big-ryan It’s not unconstitutional and I remember looking at polls and voter confidence was abysmal.  For both parties.  To me that’s all that matters. If there’s a perception problem fix it.   And no I don’t believe there was widespread material fraud.

The biggest reason for the perception of there being a problem is directly due to Trump lying that there is a problem.  Getting people to distrust the election results is an attack on our democracy.

@hurryinghoosiers I think it’s Trump AND this patchwork system with differing rules, deadlines, all the rest.   They should federalize national elections and use nonpartisan pros.  I don’t want you involved and you don’t want Dbm involved.  Let’s fix it.

Like a non-partisan, redistricting commission? Count me as against a council of wise elders that will inevitably get commandeered and politicized like we’ve seen with every “non-partisan” body. SCOTUS, The Fed, etc
