I have mixed feelings about this, but I’m sure the left will claim it’s a ploy to rig the elections while the right will claim that it’s a response to the failure of congress to respond to overwhelming public support for voter ID & more secure elections & to the states refusing to be transparent on voter roles etc. I’ll not be surprised, nor will I be disappointed if the feds get involved so long as the missing transparency today is there. I have no confidence in states that have proven they are willing to defraud the American people, which at this point is probably most of them.
@oneeyedundertaker I appreciate the reasonable, measured response.
There are a boatload of underlying issues here including federalism, the myth of widespread voter fraud, the scope and breadth of executive power and whether a related executive order would survive the inevitable court challenges. There are also practical concerns surrounding the implementation of new processes and procedures just months before voting begins in critical midterm elections.
I'm jammed up today and have to drop out but maybe someone else can take point.

Many are dismissive of voter fraud as a “myth” but fail to accept that many of us are not pushing for additional security due to past fraud so much as a preventative measure for the future, not to mention that we’re all assuming that all fraud has been uncovered. If I’d asked folks in Minnesota how much fraud there was in autism related causes two years ago, they’d have been able to point to the fact that virtually none has been found. That doesn’t make it a “myth”. Does anyone really think that past vulnerabilities, even if rate, won’t be exploited on a larger scale if possible? I don’t want to wait until an election is influenced by fraud to do something about it. Election security only prevents those who shouldn’t be voting from doing so, & I have enough faith in people that they are capable enough to get the necessary documents, ID’s etc. to vote.
@oneeyedundertaker stricter gun laws only prevents those who shouldn't have a gun from having one. 😉
Most of the polls I've seen show that Dems are on board with voter IDs IF they are free and easy to obtain. Seems like a good compromise. Most Americans, Dem/Rep/indie, would like election Day to be a national holiday. Also seems like a good compromise.

Can’t buy a gun without an ID. It’s a bad analogy - no one is trying to change who can vote.
it was a joke. Voter ID laws are pretty popular. Something like 80% of Americans like them. Including 70% of registered Dems.@oneeyedundertaker stricter gun laws only prevents those who shouldn't have a gun from having one. 😉

Unfortunately, both parties create strawman arguments about the issue rather than compromising and passing legislation that everyone wants. It's better politics for them to be seen fighting and not budging. Even though it's really not and we are all sick of it.
