How should I think about the interplay between local and state laws?

Why should a state law trump a local (muni) or regional (e.g., county) law?

We had that here in Indiana up until around 15ish years ago.  Without State preemption you had no idea if you were breaking a law while carrying.  A simple fictitious example based on reality would be that it was legal to carry in the park in my hometown by state law, but in Rufusville, they had an ordinance that said no guns in the park.  When I go to pick up my kid at the Rufusville park I was committing a crime if I had my firearm with me.

Before preemption, you could literally be legal on one side of the street and then be committing a gun crime if you crossed to the other side, because any political subdivision could pass its own gun laws.

It makes it impossible to know if you're legally allowed to carry, and as a law abiding citizen, you just don't carry your firearm if you don't know what's legal.  It's just another way to infringe on someone's constitutional rights.  Same reason I despise the idea of "Free Speech Zones".

Here's the Indiana Code specific to Firearms

IC 35-47-11.1-2Political subdivision regulation of firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories prohibited

Sec. 2. Except as provided in section 4 of this chapter, a political subdivision may not regulate:

(1) firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories;

(2) the ownership, possession, carrying, transportation, registration, transfer, and storage of firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories; and

(3) commerce in and taxation of firearms, firearm ammunition, and firearm accessories.

As added by P.L.152-2011, SEC.4.

That little notebook was only in my range bag so I could keep track of what was working in different rifles and how scopes were adjusted for zero, but it's turned into the Encyclopedia Britannica.

@hooky one of our best buddies from law school got married to this chick from rural ohio.  her pop was a farmer.  anyway at their wedding reception i ended up in the bar line with him for about ten solid minutes talking.  at the end of it he pulled one of those little notebooks out and wrote in it.  then walked off.  i asked my buddy, his sil, about it and he just said that's not good.  if he wrote in it it means he didn't like something you said and was making a note of it

My dad keeps one on him, but usually it's in the truck.  He keeps track of everything they do in each field and the yields.  He'll pull out his little notebook and compare it to everything that my brother has downloaded and printed out for him from all the monitors on the equipment.  He'll always have that little notebook for that.

She’s beat. Pussy like grand central station.

Also a toxic person. Her and Shane Gillis sitting next to each other the entire night was kind of impressive on both their parts.

@hooky i love it!  we still laugh about it.  my buddy said that he thinks it was very likely that my answers were off.  like how many hours it took me to get to the wedding from florida.  about how many miles.  his tolerance apparently wsa very very low for wrong answers and that it was better to just say i'm not sure than to guess.  being put in the notebook was not somewhere you wanted to be.

I don't know about crisis, but the George Floyd joke was definitely stupid. I'm not even sure how it was supposed to be funny.

There was a pretty hardcore Charlie Kirk told at that roast.

I groaned more than laughed. But I don’t get in the way of professional comedians and their business.

Do you? Funny guy?
