The unmistakable benefits of free markets and capitalism

Russia v Ukraine is more than politics.  It’s economics. It’s real time proof of why conservative, capitalist, and competitive economics works.  I am curious about why Ukraine is kicking butt with its drone program. AI provides this explanation.

Ukraine has fostered a decentralized, highly competitive, and open-market approach to drone manufacturing to counter Russia’s state-owned production. This free-market ecosystem of over 500 defense startups and private manufacturers relies on grassroots fundraising, government procurement reforms, and venture capital to drive rapid, battlefield-tested technological innovation. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key facets of Ukraine's drone market include:
  • Procurement Marketplaces: The Ukrainian government established the Brave1 cluster to connect researchers, investors, and producers. Frontline units use DOT-Chain—a digital procurement platform—to order specific models directly from manufacturers based on unit needs and operational successes.[1, 2]
  • Grassroots & Private Funding: While state budgets fund major acquisitions, private crowdfunding organizations like the Serhiy Prytula Foundation and Come Back Alive act as a parallel armaments system, sourcing millions of dollars to supply units directly. [1]
  • Supply Chain Resilience: Ukrainian firms have heavily diversified their supply chains away from Chinese components, successfully developing "China-Free" drones and securing Pentagon interest. [1, 2]
  • Export Expansion: Ukraine has formally legalized combat drone exports, generating commercial value and establishing international supply and doctrine-sharing agreements with NATO allies and Middle Eastern countries. [1, 2]

This is all self explanatory.  Free economies work the best in fulfilling needs and meeting demand.  The benefits of meritocratic decentralization cannot be ignored.

When this war is finally over, I hope the economic lessons of the Ukrainian drone program live on.  There is a lot of substance here.

im beginning to think Ukraine is gaining the upper hand, thanks to a decentralized free economy in this sector.  A couple of years ago I gave Ukraine no chance.

Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.
