I agree, violent Dems are making it dangerous to be outspoken about many topics. Just look at Kirk & all of the other violence perpetrated by the left recently…
@jdbb re: that poll. In addition to city leadership, any number of business leaders, administrators and educators in Springfield have come out against not extending TPS for their Haitian neighbors. That said, Clark County is a pretty rural area overall and a lot of the county would fit the profile of a typical MAGA voter. Maybe it's anecdotal, but most the people I know who still live there are in favor of the Haitian community staying. And they're ones that have immediate skin in the game as they teach, run businesses and interact with the Haitian community regularly.
On a personal note, when I was in high school, I volunteered for the local Democratic party group to pass out pamphlets and do call voters. The first night I did calls, I had a handful of just awful people tell me the most awful things. One guy told me he'd never vote for Clinton because he wants to take his guns away and asked me what he'd do when all the n-words come for his stuff. The guy running the call center told me that, yeah, you'll come across those types of people when making these calls. Presuming that guy is still alive, I'd bet a lot of money that I could tell you who he's voted for and where he stands on the Haitian community in town. When my brother was a senior in high school, his high school basketball team had a transfer who put them over the top competitively. They ended up winning the state championship that year. He happened to be black and some of the local opposing teams would just say the most horrible racist things about bringing him in. I'd guess those people probably aren't on board with the Haitians staying.
All that said, it doesn't surprise me that there are a number of low-information voters who's knee jerk reaction is to want the Haitians out. The people who are in charge - both at the local and state level - see what's happened to this town that has been slowly dying and know that deporting 10,000 - 15,000 residents in a relatively short timeframe is a bad idea on a lot of levels.

A woman I went to high school with was one of the most vocal opponents to bringing in/keeping the Haitian community. Friends would send clips of her at city council meetings. She stopped going to those meetings once Springfield started getting national attention on this matter. For what it's worth, I don't think she was concerned about violent blowback. I think she was worried that people would see her as a racist.
There is a cost to vocalizing that opposition as you well know. Just as there was a perceived cost to vocalizing support for Trump in 2016.That poll looks suspicious to me. Just doesn't look legit.
If the people in Springfield were that opposed to Haitians I'd think would would have heard more about it.

Again, I know nothing about how the poll works, but if the majority of constituents want one thing and the government and other leaders want something else, it generally doesn't turn out well and feels like a slap in the face of democratic principles.

You could be right about her motivations. The perception and potential employment risk are real concerns. Look at how many people have lost their jobs over making stupid statements on social media, for example. Plenty on both sides of the aisle.

Totally agree. Without tipping her hand too much, professionally it wouldn't be good if she became the national face of whatever perceived anti-Haitian push there was. I disagreed with her stance, but totally get why she took a step back when it became a national story.
