Pierre Damas Bel graduated high school last spring and started his freshman year at Wright State a week or so ago. He was a soccer player, wanted to join JROTC and eventually train to be a doctor. He was trying to live the American dream. All of it was tossed into question when TPS was rescinded. We're losing our way when kids like Pierre feel betrayed or unwanted here. A whole community is hurting over this. America needs to do better.

@ohio-guy We've been failing legal immigrants for decades. Our immigration system has been broken and has needed a major overhaul for a long time. The wait and the process for people who are following the rules are ridiculous and no one seems to want to step up and offer a plan to reform it.

Did he by chance, "THROW HIMSELF in front of an Indian trucker on I-70"? The story sounds like built to pull on heart strings. DO you have any heart warming stories of BORN American Vets living on the streets?

Suicide is a tragedy, especially of the young.
Talking about policy and your conclusion that this is a failure of our legal immigrant population, the law actually allows detention of all these individuals, which I guess means they were not here legally at the time due to the reversal of their status. Do you think mass detention would have been better than the ankle monitor?
Also, although I love to pile on politicians, from the story it sounds like the real mental distress came from people at Wright State who were bullying the kid about the ankle monitor. So maybe this failure falls under the category of general human nature failure.

First Pierre was not an immigrant. He was a beneficiary of the TPS program ( which the Biden administration abused). Once the temporary status ended, he should have returned to his own country.
Second, what duties does the U.S. owe immigrants anyway? They are supposed to be self- sufficient and be free to earn their own way and not depend on our generous safety net.
Third it’s really a reach to suggest our actions had anything to do with his suicide. He obviously had issues which should have at least been seen by his family if he had one. If no family I have no answer other than to say the government definitely cannot be put in the position of serving as his family. You said “America needs to do better.” I think America did pretty damn good by allowing him to reside here temporarily.

He was an immigrant. He moved here from another country and was planning on going through the proper channels to live here permanently.

You're right that he and his family was owed the autonomy and freedom to earn their own way. They weren't relying on any 'safety net.' He graduated high school last year and reportedly wanted to go to school to be a doctor. He wanted to enroll in ROTC. His family have jobs here.

It's not a reach. At all. I don't know what his mental health status was leading up to his suicide, but being faced with the reality that he was going to live here treated like a criminal and ridiculed until the US government decided to ship him back to a country where he and his family likely would be unsafe probably didn't help matters. No one's hand was forced to revoke their TPS status.
Your questions muddy the bigger picture here. Why couldn't TPS be extended with a path to citizenship for people like Pierre and his family? By most accounts the Haitians in Springfield wanted to stay there and they were mostly welcomed to stay by the community? I see no reason why the federal government had to do an about face and decide these people staying in their communities was a bad thing.
