The fleetingness of life

One of my best friends just called. Dude survived Stage 4 liver cancer, had a surgery about 5 years ago, and is now cancer free.  He married his current wife before the surgery and she was committed to sticking it out with him no matter what.  She's super healthy, work out freak, has the body of a 20 year old but is early 50s. My buddy said she's the healthiest person he's ever known.

She just found out she has three brain tumors. Big. Making her dizzy, giving her stroke like symptoms, crushing sensation in the chest, and much more. They just did the biopsy today, and he'll be getting a prognosis soon, but it doesn't sound good.

So crazy. He took her to the hospital a few days ago right after talking to me, telling me they had just bought a boat slip on Lake Monroe and were going to look for boats to start taking more advantage of life. Now, who knows.

Watch the sunset or sunrise tomorrow, boys. We have limited time.

My mom's best friend was in Vegas with her daughter a month and a half ago, living it up.

She gets back, starts having stomach pain, goes to the doctor and gets diagnosed with stomach cancer.  A week and a half ago, she died.

58 years old.  Nothing was wrong a little over a  month ago and now she's gone.

Fuck cancer.

we lost a dear friend to Alzheimer’s last year.  Two more are in to multiple years of it.  All three involve living spouses/care givers.  It’s a terrible, slow, progressive disease where each day/ week/month is worse than the previous one.  Life is indeed fleeting, but a slow death progression could be worse.

@co-hoosier

Indeed it can be. Both my parents had long, lingering deaths. We lost them long before they expired.

@unclemark Yep. Me too. It's the thing I fear most for the future outside of some calamity befalling the wife or child.

a friend of ours was early 40s, very fit, mountain biker (some extreme), left his big law job for a cushy in house gig a while back…

Has a heart attack out of nowhere. Survives, gets a stent put in, two weeks in he’s feeling better, going for mild walks. Then he drops dead at home in the hour nobody was watching him. No family history (parents still alive). Four kids 11 down to 4 yo. Crushing.

but I refuse to leave on a negative note… look at this determined rockstar! If he can drum, we can enjoy our lives.

Cancer sucks so much. I cannot understand how we still don’t have a cure.

Hope your friend’s wife beats cancer and they get to enjoy Lake Monroe.

The hopeless cynic in me says it’s because there is MUCH more money in treating cancer than there is in curing it.

An inconvenient truth.

@hoopsdoc be more present.  we miss you.  and that's a shitty jaded way to think but sadly i share it.  my core group of best friends.  no exaggeration for almost 50 years now is seven of us.  two already dead.  by 50.  our law school core group. 7 of us. 1 dead already.  again by 50.   with all of hte insane advancements it seems inconceivable that this is still happening.  but what do i know: 1) i took college algebra 11 times and 2) i hate doctors and the healthcare system

* every last person in my soccer group since college is alive. and it is almost 40 people.  coincidence?   maybe.  but keep moving.  they're far dumber and more fit than the other groups

Just got a prognosis. Stage 4 gliobalblastoma (sp?). Terminal.  21 month average lifespan with treatment.

My best friends wife passed 2 weeks ago. She was diagnosed in January with liver/stomach/ pancreas cancer. Treatments were trending positive and they gave her 6-8 yrs. 1 month later, gone.
