This leftist spin out of yours is sad.
@snarlcakes I don’t have a clue.
You should have stopped after your first sentence. Smart people aren't anymore altruistic than everyone else. If AI was as dangerous as they claim they would be advocating for shutting it down. They of course are not. They're just trying to gain regulatory capture because open source is eating their lunch. Welcome to life there is risk and people lose. In 12 months we can circle back and see who is right because it's not slowing down.
Note, if you will, the dichotomy in how these AI leaders are reacting. You have guys like Jensen, Elon, Zuck, Satya, Karp who own and run mature companies. They've been doing this for decades and have seen major technological shifts before. They are more or less are taking this in stride, they aren't unnecessarily scaring people, they understand the risks just as well and that they need to be managed.
Then you have the heads of the frontiers "labs", Dario and Altman. These guys run companies that are set to have the two biggest IPO's of all time but would rather you think of them as a researcher on a college campus somewhere and not business owners. Incidentally, their companies are highly unprofitable and set to lose major market share share. They are behaving erratically. They're inexperienced and not the adults in the room.
Be careful which one's you choose to believe.
@snarlcakes altruism? Has nothing to do with that. It has to do with revenue. Money. Seeing how far you can go. You think these people care about the public? Child please. I’m all for people becoming trillionaires. Why would I care. Good for them. But I also don’t want some ai independently doing something that will harm me. So out of precaution I’d like it independently monitored. That that is a hot take is bizarre

I don't think being worried about AI and advocating for government regulation is bizarre. I think you're just wrong and it would lead to the bad outcomes that most government overreach lead to.

A quick cheat sheet for you @bar-down. Bill Gates was too far left to fit on the graph.
@dbmhoosier where’s the penalties and reporting section?
No idea I just thought the typo under Trump's signature was hilarious given the topic of super intelligence.

Greg for the win!

What exactly would government regulation accomplish? Do you think AI is an ultra- hazardous activity? Is it inherently dangerous? Seems to me the harm AI can do would always be directly related to a specific human element. AI isn’t like atomic energy or jet airliners both of which are only available to certain defined institutions and thus we can draw regulations. AI is available to everybody, including jail inmates as I posted above. I have no idea what government could reasonably do. I think we must depend on those who create it.
@co-hoosier you’re wedded to human control. Until you relinquish that misguided understanding you will never understand

What do the well-intentioned US AI nerds want? Agreement among each other to follow specified rules.
Comment: Never going to happen. Can’t trust non-US entities.
Alternative: Focus sufficient AI development on security.
The other ideas in your article—pfft.
The link really doesn’t say how AI can kill us all. A kill switch? What does that even mean. Besides a kill switch can be hacked by humans or maybe even AI.
Did a Bernie Bro write this?
