@co-hoosier and how many humans in this world are operating with malice? If AI can easily allow any small groups of shitheads to create a biological weapon, for example, what does that look like for the future of humanity?
@twenty coh has a weird stubbornness about ai shit. The simple reality is that not one person on this board understands what’s going on with it, how it works, what threat it presents etc. so if a couple of these little nerds in that world come out and say we have a problem we should listen
The question is not whether AI poses problems and makes it easier for humans to be baddies or to amplify human error. This is undisputed.
The issue is how should we address these concerns. I don’t think more government, pauses, moratoriums etc gives us that answer.
An interesting discussion here.... I look at it from a different angle re: threats/safety. While there may come a time when have to worry about Skynet tuning on us.... I think the more immediate threat concerns are from rogue actors using AI capability to greatly increase threats that already exist. That could be anything from widespread advanced hacking, development of weaponry (bio/chemical), etc.
These capabilities were typically only found in the domain of highly educated/ specialized professionals operating in state sponsored / state adjacent institutions. And security was often something that governments maintained a lot of control over via security clearances, etc.
AI threatens to really throw this out the window, when you could have someone (or some groups) with only rudimentary knowledge be able to basically equalize the capabilities that were long held very tightly.

A real world example of AI problems. When talking with a paralegal from my old office I asked her about some of the pending litigation. Back in my day, we always had a handful of jail cases over alleged bad conditions. These were always very unprofessional pro se cases. Now with AI, the inmates file very professional looking complaints that cite all the relevant cases. Now there are dozens of pending cases. The federal courts need to separate the legit cases from bullshit and AI makes that difficult. Glad I’m out of it.
@co-hoosier I think we've all discussed before. No profession is more ripe for AI disruption than the legal profession. That and of course the coders, which might as well be an extinction level job. There will always be some need for actual expertise in both areas, but 80-90% is going to be done with AI in future. I assume the courts will have to adjust and use their own AI to churn through work, also.

He's just not scared of his own shadow. 10 years ago climate change was going to kill us all. 5 years ago it was Covid. 12 months ago we were all going to be out of jobs. Rudimentary knowledge meaning the ability to formulate a sentence in the English language otherwise known as a prompt. And then revise and adapt the prompt until you get the exact instructions on how to build exactly what it is you’re trying to build such as anthrax or whatever.

The problem is, even the experts can’t see into the black box now with some of these LLM proto-AIs. So how do you expect Congressmen to figure this stuff out?
