Of course, it's up in Hamilton County.

If your BBQ requires a condiment, then it's not worth being called BBQ.

It's complicated. Texture-dependent I guess. I like dry rub pork ribs and burnt ends, but I also like saucy pulled pork. I'm not so much into super saucy ribs & burnt ends or dry pulled pork.
I generally don't like any sauce to overpower the smoky goodness of the meat.
In my travels to BBQ meccas, Memphis has probably been my overall favorite. I kind of like them all though, to be honest. I thought I would totally hate the Carolina mustard sauce BBQ style, but was surprised that, while completely different, it was tasty.
I can't say I have had a single memorable BBQ experience anywhere in the state of Indiana, not that I have tried much. That's like going to Kentucky for dental work.

Correct. Carolina & Kansas City bbq is sauced up slop for the masses.
i rather enjoy Carolina BBQ, but it is nuanced.

BBQ without sauce is an oxymoron. It’s about the sauce. It’s always been about the sauce. Otherwise you are just talking about smoked meat.
Arthur Bryant’s in KC is my #1 But it slipped after he died.

The sauce is meant to be a complement. People often ask themselves why Texas is far and away the best state for BBQ. It's because of how minimalist the preparation is. Salt, pepper, a good cut of meat (preferably brisket), post oak wood, time and temperature control.
This style comes from Czech and German immigrants who would roll over in their grave if they saw the sugar sludge use in KC or the Vinegar bullshit used in Carolina. These areas started using so much sauce because:
A. They didn't have access to the same quality and quantity of meat. It was often rancid or lower quality and they needed to mask the taste.
B. They don't have the German/ Czech influence and can't smoke meat properly for shit.
So next time you're slurping down those BBQ ribs covered in sauce, remember you're partaking in a tradition that stems from rancid meat and and inferior smokers.
Texas BBQ the best? It's almost always beef. Apples and oranges.
Comparing Texas BBQ to Memphis BBQ is like comparing a cheeseburger to a breaded pork tenderloin sammy. They may both be good, but any comparison / ranking is silly. Like ranking a football quarterback vs. a basketball point guard.

Correct. And we all inherently understand that beef is superior to pork. Ergo TX BBQ is superior to the rest.
And the other reasons I mentioned.
I'll dive into the Water Cooler not for politics or arguing about the Left or the Right being worse or who's an idiot but I will for this very important topic...I am from Indiana and spent much of my life there but I live in South Carolina. I'm just one idiot but I will say with as much confidence as I possibly can that the BBQ I can get here is SO much better than anything I ever had in the Midwest.
My personal favorite, and a place I would recommend as highly as possible if you are ever in the Upstate of SC, The Smokin' Pig. The BBQ is good (pulled pork, beef brisket and then multiple sauce options that you can use however much you'd like) but the sides and dessert are just phenomenal. Loaded potato salad, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, corn bread (seasonal, unfortunately)...so good. Dessert is a southern specialty, banana pudding. Unbelievably good. There are three locations but the original location is in Pendleton and about 10-15 minutes from Clemson and it's incomparable.
BBQ is intended to prepare meat for consumption in the time before refrigeration. Often it was rancid and sauce was part of the preparation.
The Germans and Czechs ground bad meat, loaded with a bunch of stuff, put in a casing, and called it sausage.

These lists are so cringe… I don’t know the Takeout but will block them

Oh I won't argue with you, Indiana is certainly not known for BBQ, but if you knew where to look back in the day you could find BBQ on the near east and north sides of Indy that was damned fine. Zebs, BBQ Heaven and a few others (hell guys had pits off of 25th and 30th street in empty lots smoking meats from before dawn to after dark).
God I miss the 70's and 80's.
