First, best show to watch on Thursdays since Cheers.
Second, my top takeaway tonight was Coach was pleased that there was so many teachable moments and opportunities to be humble and hungry for the defense to improve their attention to detail.
He stated every player on D had mistakes and improvements to make and if I recall correctly said the entire team graded at a C minus.

Some pundits and IU fans predicted this team will be better than last season’s and that no longer appears to be the case. Cignetti said he could let last season’s team coast with little intervention but he has to be much more hands on with this current one. Not a great sign.

No. Some people said this team had more talent on paper and could be better in certain aspects, but almost no one (certainly no sharp analysts) said this team would be better than the 2025 16-0 champs with the Heisman winner.

And the coach being hands on happens and is part of the job.
@middawg Cig seems to be more revealing with how he feels in these Thursday shows. Maybe it’s the longer format. Good stuff.
@iugradman He said the same thing last year about last year's group at this point in the season. If you notice he said last year's group got to the point where he could be hands off, meaning they did not start out that way.

You clearly weren’t paying attention then to what some people and fans were saying. And I never said a coach shouldn’t be hands on, but a coach going from a more hands off approach because the prior team was playing at a high level to a hands on approach with the current one shows there are issues.

No, you made that up to setup something to complain about. Sad.
@iugradman Just because a team needs to be coached harder doesn't mean it's worse talent-wise. The big question was always what the intangibles are.
Were some fans and pundits saying they're going 16-0 over the top? Yes, we've addressed this. I did think it was an interesting quote, but it's not a death sentence.
Thank you for reading Hoosier Huddle

I once thought going 16-0, winning the Heisman and the Championship would shut gradman up. Silly me.
I don’t think one serious analyst had us being better this year or going 16-0 again. Maybe Sam, but he’s a fringe guy.
The consensus view is 10.5 wins and +950 to win it all, which is like a 9% chance.

2025 was a rough season for him. He’s addicted to misery.
I think few said this team would be better. I think many said the ceiling may be higher for this team due to talent level, but as someone mentioned, a lot of intangibles & a few surprises have to go right for that to be realized into an overall better better team.

My steak is too juicy and my lobster too buttery. Whatever shall I do?
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.
