California should be the crown jewel of the United States. Scenery, weather, ag, high tech can’t be beat anywhere in the world. Yet California is losing population and influence in the House of Representatives to Texas and Florida, two states where the weather not only stinks, but is dangerous.
There is one, and only one reason for this:
Democrats.

The city's finances have been a mess ever since I arrived in 2000, with each mayor just kicking the can down the road, privatizing the parking meters, the toll roads, etc. in short-sighted attempts to fill budget holes.

I think a Newsom nomination would be bad for the Democrats prospects of winning the the White House. Watch the videos of the difference in Santa Monica over the last 10 years. Parts of San Diego as well.

Just watch the Democrat office holders performing instead of governing, screaming about TRUMP! instead of proposing policy, or the rank and file marching, protesting, rioting and you see the epicenter of the modern Democratic Party.

Miami, and South Florida which led Tom Tancredo to say south Florida was like the third world have turned a bad situation around with different political leadership.
Depends which part. The bad policy re criminality mostly stems from the State's Attorney, a county role. But they have nothing to do with finances. The finances have been an issue since the public unions captured the state and local governments here. In a few years, the average teacher salary in the failing CPS system will be $114k a year! and their annual pension: ~$70k a year if you work until age 60.I think it’s worse than kicking the can down the road.
