The best thing the Democrats have going for them is the Republicans. Both parties have a probblem with shooting themselves when they get in power. To answer OP's question, traditional old-school Democratic policies are still broadly popular with the American voter. And even a few of the policies that would have been considered "woke" at one time have become mainstream (gay rights, e.g.). The party will have to move to the center on crime and immigration, for sure, but simply highlighting traditional Democratic economic planks should do well, especially if the cost of living crisis is still ongoing (last quarter, wages grew slower than spending, which is unsustainable). For the Dems to win big in the midterms, two things need to be true:
1. People are still worried about cost of living.
2. The early entrants into the nomination discussion include at least some moderates with broad appeal.
For the Dems to then parlay that into a possible victory in 2028, they will need one of those early entrants to hold off any far-left attack to become the nominee.
"I agree we need to protect your job from overseas. Companies shouldn't be able to so easily outsource your job to someone 12 time zones away. But it's not enough to protect American jobs - we also need to strengthen them and armor them against corporate greed, and make it so the American worker earns enough to buy the things they need, which Trump and the Republicans have been unable to deliver the past four years."
A message like that is a winner, if it's delivered by someone believable. For many reasons, I don't think Newsom is that guy, although the new anti-Trump Newsom in troll clothes is fun as hell, I have to admit. Obviously, lefties like AOC aren't that guy. I really think it needs to be a Beshear or Shapiro or someone like that, to really pull off that messaging with some sincerity.
I'm not confident the Dems can bring themselves to do the smart thing, but I'm also confident the GOP will be unable to solve our many problems before the next election cycle, so the opportunity will be there if the Dems don't insist on scoring an own goal.
There are 10 types of people in this world, those who know binary and those who don't.

I think they shoot themselves before they even take power by writing checks they can't cash.
"Everything is too expensive under Biden."
No shit.
"We're going to fix that."
How?
"By making America great again!"
Yeah, but how?
"GO AMERICA!"
You never answered the question.
"GO AMERICA! YEAH!"
Because the fact is a lot of our problems can't be fixed, at least not easily fixed by someone new taking office and changing things quickly. So much stuff has combined to cause the problems we have that they are by now simply built into the system. So all the two parties can do is take turns blaming each other, and any candidate who promises he can fix the problems is 99.9% setting himself up for failure.
The party will go extinct if they don't make massive changes.

@dbmhoosier lol....the party isn't going extinct. Even if it did another socialists party would take their place. Unfortunately, we're stuck with them.
The GOP does have an opportunity to string together a decade plus of controlling the Oval Office and at least one branch of Congress. So far, things are going well. Hopefully, they don't f#ck it up.
I’m willing to put money on in 9 years, I’d still want to hit.
Nope...

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

Nope...
You and I, no we wouldn't.
But Bougie the wood pecker.... He'd hit that like a 1974 craftsman hand drill with no armature brushes in it. Even a blue extension cord wouldn't work.

These are the type of polices Democrats should be pursuing and thinking about. I still don't understand why they went away from the middle class. It would also be a good idea for the GOP to pursue as well.

They want people dependent on the government. As soon as people start doing well in life they become more conservative.

This is rocket surgery level thinking to the left.
The simple middle that THINK they have left leaning sensitivities, hate to admit that they have been dooped. YEP @unclemark , looking at you brother. Y'all have been indoctrinated, and don't understand that you are first class in the cattle car going to a gas chamber. I honestly can't imagine anyone promoting free paychecks vrs "bootstraps". It's just like Antifa, you are exactly what your stated message is against. But you are organizing to kill your own. Oh well, very good luck with that.

Ron Johnson has called for Trump to pull his nomination. This guy is in the same league as Gaetz.
