Purdue student on valid visa now in indefinite detention

This is a weird story. It involves a 20-year old female going to Purdue who is cute.  OK, bad joke.  Seriously though, in May she completed her freshman year at Purdue as pharmacy major. She was an honors student in high school.

She is Yeonsoo Go and she is South Korean. She came to the USA, specifically to New York, in 2021 with her mother, an Episcopalian priest, on a religious worker’s dependent visa, otherwise known as the R-2 visa. Her visa was set to expire in December 2025, and knowing the restrictions on travel within 6 months of visa expiration, she scheduled a routine visa renewal appointment, with the request (with Purdue's support) to transfer to a student visa.

Like many foreign born legal residents or even visitors, she was nervous about ICE policies.

Well, her fears were justified. She was apprehended by ICE at her hearing in New York and moved first for several days to a holding facility with no beds, showers, or hot food, and no changes of clothes. She was then flown to the Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana.  ICE would not tell her parents her whereabouts but they learned about it when their daughter's status was reported online and confirmed when she was able to make a phone call.

ICE claims that her visa expired 2 years ago, a claim strongly refuted by her parents, the Episcopalian diocese, Purdue University, and even by the government of South Korea. It is also clear that Yeonsoo herself scheduled the visa renewal review, which you would not do if you were hiding out from immigration.

This crap should stop.

Also, there is no record of her participating in any on campus or off campus protest activities or belonging to any activist group.

But now people are protesting on her behalf.

Sad. Americans seemingly don't care who gets caught up in this war. Even citizens have been detained and moved around.

These stories just keep coming.

Tae Heung “Will” Kim has been in the country for 35 years, since age 5. He is a legal, permanent resident with a valid green card, researching cures for Lyme disease in a doctoral program at Texas A&M. He had a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana in 2011, which is now legal in his state. He went through removal proceedings for that 2011 conviction after he served his punishment, including community service, and paid for an expungement. Customs and Border Protections response was basically We don't care, it's on the record. You're not a native, we need our stats, "because we can".

He went to South Korea to attend his brother’s wedding. On his return he was detained for more than a week by immigration authorities at the San Francisco International Airport, sleeping in a chair and living off food sold in the airport, then was put into removal proceedings to be deported, held at an immigration detention facility in Arizona. There has been no communication with Kim since he's been transferred to Arizona

His lawyer has not yet been allowed to talk to him

We have become a police state.

PS - I notice none of the usual MAGA suspects are chiming in on this.  I would be interested to hear from stoolcpa.

They are still pretending that ICE is focusing only on illegals committing violent crimes.

When a 20-something straight A non-criminal legal VISA holder is grabbed and whisked away in an unmarked car by thugs not in uniform and not showing any ID, they plug their ears and yell "blah-blah-blah, make America Great again!"

I feel almost certain the cruelty and 'collateral damage' brought on by the aggressiveness of ICE enforcement isn't just a byproduct. I think people like Tom Homan and Stephen Miller had it baked into the equation long ago. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Miller is giddy about this.

There must be a special place in hell reserved for those guys.

@ohio-guy The dumbest, albeit the most dangerous justification will be something along the lines that the former administration let in so many illegals that you would have to expect this too happen, so really, the fault lies with Biden.

Once we accept that certain lines will be crossed, it's hard to get that toothpaste back in the tube.

Not all Trump voters are like dbm. I'm seeing a lot of "This isn't what I voted for" sentiment online, on the Kommie media I watch, and personally from a bunch of MAGAish people. Too bad they were so naive as to think this madman and his henchmen wouldn't go crazy and send out bands of roving masked marauders to grab people off the street (and from churches and courthouses and schoolyards) to spirit them away, never to be seen again.

There's no question. "The cruelty is the point" was a byword of Trump 1.0's border policy. Miller and Homan are Nazi-like in their views of the migrant population. That doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is the extent that Noem has bought in (even with the dog story).

Bizarre that ABC reported recreational marijuana use is now legal in Texas.  It isn’t.
