Lot of good choices (and a couple I've never heard of), but there are also a couple that I think that they got the right artist but not the right song. (For example, I'm more fond of Paradise City from G&R versus Sweet Child of mine and Start Me Up from the Rolling Stones compared to Gimme Shelter).
What is the greatest guitar riff of all time? We asked readers
Couple of honorable mentions on my part:
Poison: Nothing but a good time
Deep Purple: Smoke on the Water
Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit
Survivor: Eye of the Tiger
Eagles: Hotel California
Chuck Berry: Johnny B Goode

Should probably put the * on there that you mean the original Layla and not that piece of crap Unplugged version.
Best opening riffs as far as I'm concerned:
Roundabout (Yes)
I Feel Fine (Beatles)
Black Sabbath War Pigs
Heart Barracuda
Steppenwolf Born to be Wild
Led Zeppelin Immigrant Song
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
Best opening riff that was just a tease would be Go All the Way by the Rasberries.

I'm considering doing a proper 64 song tournament.
Question is, do you allow multiple entries from one band or not? If no, we may have to have a preliminary round to pick the best of one bands library.
I could pick at least three from AC/DC, Led Zepplin, the Rolling Stones, and Van Halen alone.
Metallica - enter sandman.
There are a lot of great guitar riffs, but I think Ac/DC did it best in Highway to Hell. Maybe Nirvana in Lithium as well.

Heh, I could think of several from Iron Maiden alone
Hell just do an entire Iron Maiden tournament...
