Their definition of pro immigration, and ours is not the same. Many of them think anti-cruelty is pro immigration. Some also believe wanting them to go through the lawful legal process is wanting 'open borders'. They don't want legal immigration either. It's obvious. Many slip and call legal immigrants 'illegals' constantly without thought. Basically, brown = illegal.
The cartoon caricature they've created for democrats is a self defense mechanism and projection that doesn't exist. It's a bizarro world mirror image as weird as they are but wearing a blue hat. That imaginary foe that lives in their brains and no where else allows them to continue to behave like troglodytes.

This is spot on. Even though I haven't lived there for a long time, I'm from Springfield. My parents still live in the house I grew up in and I still have a lot of family and friends there. When I was in grade school and high school in the 80s and 90s, Springfield was hemorrhaging jobs and and people. Navistar was sending jobs to Mexico en masse and a couple of other smaller companies left town. My parents had the unfortunate front row seat to watching Springfield turn from a nice little bucolic Midwestern town a place that was still relatively safe, but you wouldn't want to go to the town center/downtown or the south side. Partially due to crime, but also just because there was nothing to do in town.
When the Haitians came it didn't automatically turn the city into a Midwest wonderland. Adding 10,000 - 15,000 people to a town/county of 60,000ish people comes with growing pains, especially when the majority of those new immigrants speak little to no english. A good friend is high up with Springfield City Schools and that first year they were ill prepared to take on that many non-english speaking students. He admitted to me that there were some students in that first semester or so that simply sat in the back of the classroom, unable to participate (although there were some teachers that went above and beyond to engage them and create extra activities for them). That all got ironed out quickly.
There was a horrible incident where a Haitian man ran a stop sign and t-boned a school bus. Sadly, one of the students on the bus was killed. It was 100% the aforementioned man's fault but anti-Haitian fervor was at an all time high until the family of the kid who died in the crash asked for common sense, civility and grace for the Haitian community. They said not all of them were to blame, just the moron who hit their son's bus (my words, not theres).
And to your friend's point, Springfield's economy started to grow. Restaurants, shops, coffee shops and bars were opened. Tax revenue was growing significantly. Haitian kids started integrating into the school system (this viral facebook post from a friend of friend is worth reading on that topic). Things were definitely moving in the right direction for Springfield and local and state legislators took notice.
It's also worth mentioning that the Haitians came to Springfield legally as invited guests. A number of businesses tapped into a program that recruited them to work. Some of those businesses very likely would not have come or stayed in Springfield without that help.
It's not been all wine and roses - but by far everyone I've talked to has said it's been a net positive for the city and community as a whole. I should also say that Springfield mostly leans red. Absolutely, my golfing acquaintance was very, very positive about the Haitians in Springfield and talked about how they're adapting to the US and becoming great citizens. No doubt the guy was a Republican too - generally enthusiastic about Trump but thought the "they're eating pets" thing was just stupid as hell. Excused it with the typical "you can't believe everything he says" defense. No doubt he happily voted for Trump in 2024. If they try to deport the Springfield Haitians, there will be a lot of unhappy people in Springfield.
Read the Facebook post and it mentions Beavercreek. That's where we lived for about 13 years before moving to AZ.

I don't care who you listen to or ignore. I am sure some business owners who rely on cheap labor liked it. As did some landlords and etc. The overall economy however isn't improving from an invasion of cheap third world labor.
