He's not purposefully cruel, for one.
It was a different time. Illegal immigration in the 80s came largely from young Mexican males looking for work. Today, it's largely Central American families hoping to escape the drugs and gangs and violence.
I've never denied the southern border problem. I have had problems with Trump's approach to dealing with it. And yeah, Biden botched it when he had his shot.
All in all, it's a sad situation we find ourselves in, emboldening a madman while terrorizing otherwise decent, hard working people. Kicking the can has consequences.
This is the issue I have with the Democrats. Negligible enforcement of the border, at best, and then when someone has to clean up the mess they knowingly created it is all, "terrorizing decent, hard working people" when it is time to go home. Nah, those people knew the score coming in. Everybody who has no legal business being here has got to hit the exits. If they don't want to be "terrorized", self deport.

Only those who have committed subsequent crimes, you have a lot of idle guys doing nothing. Most of these guys aren’t investigatory, they’re door kickers. If you get a lead on someone here illegally, you track it down.

Cute. But I still haven’t heard a good answer for why ICE shouldn’t be going after people here illegally.
And they are going to brush shoulders with and detain citizens and others with lawful residence. That is unavoidable with an operation of this scale. We should all get used to that and quit the handwringing.
