My understanding is our defense agreements with Denmark and NATO allow us to build as much military architecture in Greenland as we desire.
We could send 20K troops there tomorrow and start building naval bases with a little arm twisting.

@snarlcakes who can land an army in Greenland and supply it? Seriously, Russia is the only possibility and airfields/missiles in Britain would destroy any navy trying. A Chinese fleet would be picked up weeks in advance.
Read an smidgen of history and see why Hitler couldn't invade Britain which barely had an army after Dunkirk.
Iceland might be able to pull it off, temporarily. But Greenland would quickly become a POW camp, no ability to supply or reinforce an army and they are just POWs.

The Danes don't and won't reap the benefits. The Greenlanders will. Denmark has a unique constitutional relationship with Greenland by which, basically, Greenland will become a fully independent nation (it's mostly independent already) exactly when it feels it is ready.
Reading this thread makes me feel sorry for you guys. No understanding of international relations. No understanding of military strategy. Basically you view the world as a Risk board.
Denmark has no need for Greenland. They get nothing from it. At the same time they have no where near the resources needed to secure it and the US has been bankrolling NATO forever. Hand it over!!!

No. Think about it this way. If Europe or any nation owns U.S. debt they are doing it for a reason that benefits them. It's not out of the goodness of their hearts. They get a return on the debt and it is denominated in dollars. Now if they stop buying the debt, they have to reinvest it somewhere else. Buying other debt denominated in weaker currencies would lead to lower returns. Investing in other capital markets than the U.S. would also lead to lower returns (not to mention more risk).
The reality is U.S. capital markets and bonds are the best investments in the world (relative to everyone else). Europe stopped being capitalists and innovating a couple of decades ago. It has consequence when you choose that path. Ask yourself this question. Would you rather invest in the top 10 U.S. companies or top 10 European?
