Obviously a somber exchange of head nods without words would be a better greeting in this situation, but this still isn't some major show of disrespect. AOC happened to be joining him there at this time, and they greeted each other. Notably, according to the OP's article, he was surrounded by empty space because the other pols around him had already dipped out early, while he was one of the few to stay until the very end. It's unfortunate timing, but I don't see how it reflects badly on Mamdani at all.
