@co-hoosier the problem is when we use what they wrote, said, and did, as the end all of discussion about policy today. Yes, they were great men doing great things. That doesn't mean their words of wisdom are infallible through the ages. We know from the 3/5ths measure that they were just getting done what they had to. They were under no illusion it was perfect. It was a compromise all the way down.
It is very easy to read too much into Jefferson's relationship, but that is no reason to banish the fact from history. In fact it helps explain the Constitution. Slave owners thought a new nation was a good idea, continued slavery was essential. Abolitionists thought abolition was a good idea, but a new nation was essential. That mismatch in priorities guaranteed slave owners would have the upper hand in any compromise.
That is said without judgement. I am not blaming the abolitionists, they had a very tough choice. It was never in their power to eliminate slavery. They were dealt a bad hand and played it the best they could.
If your wife cheats on you, is the best chance for your relationship to survive & succeed moving forward to continue to bring up past indiscretions & discuss it within the context of every other aspect of your marriage forever, or acknowledge it, accept an apology, & move on to focus on positives moving forward?
You guys will never allow that wound to heal. We were much closer @ 20 years ago, but race relations in the US will never improve so long as you & yours insist it’s necessary to inject race into every discussion & fuel the fire, or dullards like Aloha think the problem people have with it is over sensitivity.

Fair point. Let's do a thought experiment outside the US. Is it reasonable for Germany and Japan to teach no history from circa 1930 to circa 1950? Neither comes out good in what happens in that time frame, by teaching anything close to the truth they are just picking at the scab and refusing to allow it to heal. Should they just skip that wrap entirely?
Historically, whitewashing has always been a good strategy.

No one has suggested any such thing. If you can’t figure out there’s a ton of space between never mentioning it at all to viewing virtually every discussion through a lens of racial inequality, it’s not worth discussing with you.
Got it, you're a sensitive little ankle biting wimp.@co-hoosier the problem is when we use what they wrote, said, and did, as the end all of discussion about policy today. Absolutely no one is doing this in this thread. You're not even watching the series, so why are you pretending you know what's in it?If your wife cheats on you, is the best chance for your relationship to survive & succeed moving forward to continue to bring up past indiscretions & discuss it within the context of every other aspect of your marriage forever, or acknowledge it, accept an apology, & move on to focus on positives moving forward?

A documentary on the Revolution is an inappropriate time to mention it? If you are complaining about it in this series, I assume so. If we cannot mention it in a documentary like this, I am unsure when we can. A documentary on the Indy 500, sure. A documentary on the Apollo missions, I get it. But if we are complaining about it at this time, a time it was a big deal because England will leverage a lot of recruits from it, I am not sure when we can.
I lived in Japan for four years and I've been to Hiroshima and Nagasaki museums. If that was all you knew about the war, you'd think that the Japanese were just peacefully minding their business when we bombed them with the atom bombs. I'm only slightly exaggerating. It's well known that they've greatly minimized their role in WWII for decades after the war. They've come around some in more recent years with some acknowledgements of atrocities they committed and some of what they did in the war.If your wife cheats on you, is the best chance for your relationship to survive & succeed moving forward to continue to bring up past indiscretions & discuss it within the context of every other aspect of your marriage forever, or acknowledge it, accept an apology, & move on to focus on positives moving forward?

How is this fight still happening?
Did women, natives, and blacks play a role in the revolution? Yes.
Were women, natives, and blacks affected by the revolution? Yes.
So they are part of the story of the revolution. By definition. Get over it.

One suggestion:
Viewing history through modern eyes and holding 18th century actors/participants to 2020 standards is futile and wrong.
two things, even more, can be true. Lincoln viewed the black “race” as inferior for the times he lived in, despite believing individuals such as Frederic Douglass were brilliant. He acted from practicality. But to stop at - or even to always start with - “Lincoln articulated white supremacy” helps to miss the point unacceptably.
This doesn’t help. Of course some blacks and women played a role in the revolution to different degrees. The history is about what they did how we should remember them for what they did. That is different from remembering them for who they were.
