Every administration since 1979 has wanted Iran's regime removed but they also understood that Iran's geography trumps our technology, and it still does today.
Can't just bomb them because then they'll close Hormuz. You can't just destroy their navy and coastal assets because they'll just lob missiles and drones at tankers from a few hundred miles back. You can't easily go after after these batteries with air power because they are mobile and the terrain is mountainous. Can't get with them troops on the ground for the same reason. All the mountains are also why you also can't just march on Tehran like we did Baghdad.
This will be a net win for Iran. They lost some some dudes, some civilians (they don't care), some gear that is already being replaced, and some infrastructure China will gladly help them rebuild. Most importantly, they reminded the world they can send all of us into a deep economic recession and there really isn't anything we can do about it.

At the moment there is a tenuous cease fire and the U.S. Navy is clearing the strait of Iranian mines. If this endeavor succeeds the Iranians will have to reignite the war to again close the strait.
