There has to date not been a credible, "here is why we had to do this now" explanation. I am not sure I see why anyone should follow us into this any more than they should have Vietnam. Are we all in agreement Vietnam was a crappy, stupid decision?

Sure there was. Rubio spelled it out on day two. Israel was going to take out the leadership with a "decapitating" strike, and the US had to preemptively attack Iran's responding resources lest they get a chance to hit us first with their full capacity. Any other reason that's been proffered is window dressing. Netanyahu forced Trump's hand.

If you are going to take this tact, and I still think you’re completely wrong and Rubio clarified himself the next sentence. Israel’s intel on Khamenei’s location and declaration that they were going to act, determined the day the war started. Not whether there was a war at all.

The question I addressed (see the bolded above) was "why now," not "why a war at all?"

What does that achieve, strategically? It's well known the Iranian system isn't built upon some singular power structure. And a decapitation was never going to topple the govt.

@aloha-hoosier what we are seeing is, "we started a war without consulting you, we didn't anticipate Iran playing their left bower, will you help bail us out?"

What makes a good military ally? I suppose you ask ten different people and you'll get ten different answers but to me it's this.

1. Our very best ally's, should stand with us morally, we should share similar values, this is as opposed to strategic partners like India.

2. Our allies should minimize the help required from us, by building up their own resources. This doesn't mean large infusions of our help wont be required of us from time to time. But the general state should not be that of a mooch.

3. When we call on our allies, they ought to answer the call, if we were a good ally we'd do the same

4. Our allies should engage in intelligence sharing and sharing of capability. Our combined power, should be stronger than the power we have alone.

The Europeans have done, number one. They've all acknowledged their own strategic interests in keeping the Strait open and removing the nuclear threat.

"Nice U.S.! We agree with what you're doing! The nuclear threat needs to be destroyed!"

They've failed to do any of the other three.

Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte recently said. "If any of you think you can defend yourselves without the U.S., keep on dreaming, we need eachother."

EACHOTHER being the operative word. It can't just be them needing us. If they won't spare a few minesweepers when we need them. What good are they?

The world is changing…who we consider our allies will probably look a lot different in 2 or 3 decades. As Western Europe continues to demographically change…so does their ability to be seen as a friend

Good for Joe Kent.

https://twitter.com/i/status/2033901037816254762

That is a very bad sign for Trump.

@dbmhoosier will roll out his old defense of President Trump and claim he was undermined by the warmongers within the "deep state."

The job title is “Director of the National Counterterrorism Center” and he’s pissed we’ve annihilated the sponsor of the vast amount of global terrorism in the last half a decade?

Make it make sense

Trump promised an end to wars.  Joe is a 20 year veteran and his wife was incinerated in the last pointless was.  Hopefully that makes sense to you.

The comment has everything to do with his job title and nothing to do with what happened to his wife.

Iran has been financing terror groups around the world for the last half decade. In fact, they are the leader. What did he think his job was going to entail if Iran wasn’t his main focus along with the attempt to minimize such attacks?

Being in counterterrorism doesn't mean someone is supportive of pointless unnecessary wars.  And shocking some people don't flip flop their opinions just because Trump tells them to

Why not?  The “government” is (was?) a theocracy.

Yes. It was either join in or absorb the inevitable barrage of first strikes that were going to result.

Every president in the 21st century and the last one in the 20th century, said the Muslims in Iran must not have nukes.  Were those presidents  just blowing smoke?  Or were they serious?  Even after Midnight Hammer, the Mullahs were not going to give up their nukes.  Negotiations were going nowhere because of them, not US.

So the mission to blow up Iran's nuclear facilities weren't a success like the administration told us 9-10 months ago?
