Score update:

Ends justify means – II

Everybody does it – I

Comprehensive score update:

Ends justify means – II

Everybody does it – I

Get left behind - III

I'm going to argue with you for just a big just to see if 350 is the # of posts I need to get a yellow ball. (this is post #349)

I'm afraid the reaction score formula is an unsolvable mystery.

As for my comprehensive scoring update I was going to include China, but was reluctant to do so as I had no idea what the Roman Numeral would be for 1.4 billion and reckoned it would be so large as to be considered spam. Turns out I was worried about nothing, as the figure is M̅C̅D̅ written in Roman Numerals.

So, I just realized you have about 320 posts.

W.T.F?

lmao.

falsify an enemy so you can try to rationalize the shit you’re willing to support.

better pray that when a dem is president, they have a little more morals than Trump and his shit followers who don’t care one iota about the constitution.

Leave it to you to miss the point. Don't ever change man...th coffee

If I had to guess, I reckon the formula is based on a combination of post count, likes/dislikes received/given and threads/topics started. How they are weighted and in which combination is a secret sauce that by all accounts is a mystery.

@bulk-vh it will reboot 12/1.  I’m going to see how many medals I can gather here until then. At which point online sports gambling goes live I’m going to take my multitasking adhd talents over there

Your argument might make sense if we were talking about better solar panels or better smart phones.  We aren’t. I think quantum computing is the 21st century equivalent to the Manhattan Project or the moon shot.  Whomever develops and employs it first will have huge advantages in all technologies including cyber warfare.  We can’t be in second place.

This is why I drew an equivalency with Pflitsch and Heisenberg.  Pflitsch seeking out Trump to convince him (and probably Musk) of the importance of QC is very significant.  Apparently Trump is on board.  The consortium was created during Trump’s first term, so Trump recognizing the vital role of QC is not new.  I think Pflitsch took it into even deeper tech.

You are trying too hard to be critical.

So you and the Trump administration are better at allocating capital to QC than the free market, do I have that right?

Conservatives convinced me later in life that we should be extremely skeptical of the government (read: politicians, most of whom are corrupt morons looking to line their pockets or play up to their constituencies) picking and choosing capital allocation for anything and everything. You should add free market thinkers to your reading or listening list. I can recommend some.

Grin. I tried to add Road to Serfdom to our book club list and got shot down

Your argument is unconvincing for the reasons I posted.

I asked chatgbt what the federal legislation and funding is doing with quantum computing.  Part of what it reported.

The United States is investing heavily in quantum computing in a number of ways: research, infrastructure, industry, workforce, and regulation. Below is an overview of how it’s developing quantum computing, what the key programs are, the challenges, and what to watch going forward.

Key Pillars of U.S. Quantum Computing Efforts

  1. Federal Research Centers and Programs
    • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established National Quantum Information Science Research Centers (NQISRCs). These centers are intended to push forward quantum computing, sensing, materials, networks, etc.
      Some of these centers include:
      • Co‑design Center for Quantum Advantage (C²QA)
      • Q‑NEXT
      • Quantum Science Center (QSC)
      • Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA)
      • Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS)
    • The National Science Foundation (NSF) runs the Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes, which are cross-disciplinary research collaborations in quantum information science and technology.
    • Legislation: The National Quantum Initiative Act (2018) set up a coordinated federal effort for quantum R&D. More recent bills are seeking reauthorization and extra funding to extend and grow those efforts.
  2.
  3. Defense and DARPA Programs
    • The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is funding and running initiatives to benchmark quantum computing: for example, the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) and Underexplored Systems for Utility‑Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC). These are aimed at assessing whether utility‑scale quantum computers (i.e. ones where the computational benefits justify the costs) can be built, and pushing different hardware approaches.
  4.
  5. Industry Roadmaps and Corporate R&D
    • Major companies like IBM, Microsoft, and Quantinuum are developing roadmaps for practical quantum systems. For example, IBM has proposed designs and architectures targeting high qubit counts, modular designs, and hybrids of quantum + classical computing.
    • Startups like PsiQuantum are focusing on particular technologies (e.g. silicon photonics) to realize scalable quantum processors.
  6.
  7. Infrastructure & Ecosystems
    • Regions are being designated as quantum tech hubs. One example: “Elevate Quantum Tech Hub” in Colorado and New Mexico, funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, crowdsourcing regional research, prototyping labs, workforce development, etc.
    • Work is being done to build testbeds, foundries, fabrication facilities for quantum materials and devices, secure quantum communication networks, and quantum sensors.
    • Universities and lab consortia (e.g. the Chicago Quantum Exchange) are forming to pull together researchers, industrial partners, and government labs.
  8.
  9. Workforce Development & Standards
    • Emphasis is being placed on training the workforce: educating students in physics, engineering, computer science, and quantum information science.
    • On the standards and security side, government bodies are preparing for the risks from quantum computing (for example in cryptography). The U.S. is working on post‑quantum cryptography (i.e. encryption methods resilient to quantum‑enabled attacks).
  10.
  11. Policy, Funding & Legislation
    • Federal funding is increasing via the DOE, DARPA, NSF, etc., to support both basic research and applications.
    • Legislation such as reauthorization of the National Quantum Initiative ensures continuity and funding.
    • Export controls and regulatory oversight are also part of the strategy, to protect sensitive technology and intellectual property. (For instance, new U.S. controls on advanced technologies including quantum computing equipment.)
  12.

Reeks of central planning. Can't believe you don't see this.

I have no issues with the government providing assistance on massive projects. But I am not a free-market capitalist.

I know that the security agencies hire mathematicians as fast is possible. I have no doubt they have shared data with private QC firms all along, at least since the 90s when NIST began looking into the idea.

To my mind it isn't far off from what NASA does. NASA shares any applicable research with American aircraft companies. Sure, in this case money is involved. But how much real difference is there between IP and money since IP is easily converted.

Of course it’s planned; and coordinated; and publicly funded; and  intensely focused on rapid development and deployment.
