I've always seen a strong disconnect on the Left between a new-found valuing of children (it's the progressives of 100+ years ago that came up with child labor laws, protection of women from rape, etc.) and the coddling of the worst criminals who abuse children.
Here, we have a judge who said this was the worst case he'd ever seen. And he gets 18 years. A child lost eight years of her life to daily rape and will never live a normal life. The man who did it will be--or is--out walking around by the time she might turn 30.
So while we've come a long way from the days when kids were tools, property, small adults who could be worked and discarded, I'm not sure our notions of justice in sentencing on this stuff has caught up.
