Politicians break campaign finance rules all the time. But Santos went beyond that and perpetrated a fraud. It wasn't just that he was using campaign finances for things he shouldn't. It was that he was asking people to donate into a scheme that was always intended from the outset to be a vehicle for him to steal their money. He deserved to get the book thrown at him.
