Meh, most of the later (better?) music of your generation was made and played during Gen X's formative years, so we can at least partly claim that. And any claims to musical superiority by your generation is certainly at least somewhat offset by the fact that your generation is responsible for Disco FFS.
Early X-ers like me were raised on classic and prog rock and early metal from the late Boomer generation but we also owned main stream metal, grunge, hair band power ballads, EDM, top 40 country and the advent of gangsta rap. The soundtrack of an X-er's life has to be one of the most eclectic and varied of all generations.
If you could encompass Gen X into one song, I believe this to be our anthem...

Being born in the 60s, I'm technically late in the boomer generation, which most seem to think extends to about 1964 for birth. But I am not of the age to remember anything that I think is most characteristic of Boomers, aka summer of love, Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Woodstock, JFL/RFK/MLK assassinations, Beatlemania, early Dylan, most of the space race (I was 6 when Apollo 11 landed), etc.
