Virtually no one disagrees with this. The disagreement lies in classifying who is downtrodden vs who is choosing to fail. I am happy to help, & regularly choose to help people that truly need it. I’m not interested is parting with one penny to help the majority of those that are currently getting it.
I realize this, but my point is that we have to identify the correct causes of poor performance--the schools being free isn't one of them. (Nor, by the way, is "racism" in education or the existence of honors classes.)@bradstevens it is but it’s deeper than that. So many of these parents, single parents, are in survival mode. How do you increase parental involvement when you work a 9-5 then do gig work all night to keep the electricity on.
Once we have some sort of agreement on that, we can then move to look for solutions.
Let's be honest though. Racism is at least a plausible, logical reason for the failure of some students. Free education is not. Even if they are both proven to be wrong, they are not equal. One of them actually makes sense.

I'm not willing to give up on educating a bunch of kids from poor or minority or downtrodden circumstances because we feel its hopeless. I understand the feeling and its possible a big % of kids can't be taught certain things--math past arithmetic, or maybe biology at an AP level. I'm willing to entertain that and the possibility of shifting to a different kind of education for different people.
@snarlcakes she had a kid. i had an old lionel train set. like the big old school legit ones. i got it from my grandfather. was awesome. so she had a kid and wanted to know if she could borrow it for her kid. i said of course. hauled all of it over there. buildings. trees. and this amazing train set. she sold it.
