Lol. I honestly don't know shit about data centers. I feel like the last guy on the planet without an opinion on them. I do know though, that of the people I know, my MAGA friends have been the group most vehemently against data centers near the towns.  That all changes in 3.2.1....

The usual NIMBY shit aside, there are legit concerns about a data center's impact on water and electrical resources. If those can be addressed, then have at it. Also, having local board and council member sign NDAs ahead of time is total bullshit. If nothing else, that practice needs to be outlawed, and anyone signing them should be booted from office.

In the aggregate, the concerns aren’t legit. Especially the water part. That’s a non-issue.

State and locals should do their due diligence of course, but there is nothing to fear with data centers and there is an inverse correlation between DC density and retail electricity costs.

We get from Costco what we can't find locally. They have a great selection of US grass fed, organic meat.

Just a heads up on Costco steaks.  They're blade tenderized, so if there's any contamination introduced in the process, a steak cooked below medium well could make you sick.

@bradstevens if they would have maintained it for decades, probably.  However, it didn't last because competition from the market ate into it.

People are so dumb and have no foresight.

There was a search engine named “Google”.

They had a quasi monopoly on internet search.

Google search is sucking wind right now because of Anthropic, xAI and Open Ai.

“Regulate!” Says the moron when they see a powerful company. Don’t listen to the moron.

Not sure Google is a great example because of I don’t know all the regs involved there.

Pretty sure, though, Standard Oil developed in as close to a free market for that product as we have ever seen in this country.

But my point is: monopolies can and do occur in free markets. You and snarl seem to be arguing about what to do about it.  Fair arguments, but they don’t detract from the underlying point.

No, Standard Oil didn't develop a monopoly.  If they would have, they would have controlled 90-95% of market share into the 1900s.  The fact they didn't makes my point. In the short term a company can control very large percentages of market share, but over time it will get eaten away by competitors if margins are too high.

Trump is correct and people should change their minds.

According Grok Standard Oil topped out at 90-95% market share in 1880s.  By 1911 they were down to 65% before they were broken up.

Standard oil is actually a pretty comical example of a monopoly. I had to Google it, of course, and at their peak in the late 1800s it turns out their primary consumer product was kerosene for lighting lamps…
