@jdb

So many echoes and parallels to what we've seen in the last ten years.

Speaking of...

https://twitter.com/Polymarket/status/2105667742804463797

Brazilian politics seems bi-polar. Oscillating between free market, pro-American and straight up Marxist, BRICS scum.

Now that USAID isn't fucking with Brazilian elections, I suspect the desire of the majority of Brazilians to align closer with the U.S. will reveal itself.

You're off by about 50 years.  We do fuck with Brazilian elections but USAID hasn't done so in Brazil since the CIA was using it to counter communists there in the 70s.

Not at all. USAID and NED funded “anti-disinformation” campaigns in Brazil that disproportionally targeted pro-Bolsonaro content. USAID funding doubled in 2018 after Bolsonaro’s election.

They were sowing discontent with Bolsonaro administration.

Claims that USAID influenced or facilitated election fraud or narrative manipulation in Brazil (specifically regarding the 2022 elections) are widely considered unfounded allegations and fabrications pushed by political allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro and U.S. conservative commentators. [1, 2, 3]

Origins of the Allegations

  • The Claims: Figures like former U.S. State Department official Michael Benz and political strategist Steve Bannon alleged without evidence that USAID funded Brazilian anti-disinformation initiatives, fact-checking groups (such as Sleeping Giants Brazil and the Vero Institute), and lawyers at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to suppress conservative speech and secure a victory for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022. [2, 3]
  • The Facts: Independent investigations, fact-checkers, and the accused institutions themselves noted that there is no concrete evidence showing USAID financed these Brazilian organizations or interfered with the vote counting. The targeted groups denied ever receiving USAID funding for such activities. [2, 3]

Recent Context and Investigations

  • Dismantling of USAID: Accusations resurfaced around the time the U.S. moved to scale back or dissolve elements of USAID, which previously provided standard environmental and rainforest conservation funding in Brazil rather than electoral operations. [4]
  • Current Government Response: Brazilian authorities, including Attorney General Jorge Messias, have pushed back against foreign political interference. The Brazilian government has actively investigated reports of external funding targeting domestic democratic institutions, emphasizing that the integrity of Brazil's electoral and judicial systems must be decided solely by Brazilian voters. [5, 6, 7]

The thing about LLM’s, chud, is that sometimes you have to ask a more direct prompt to keep it from obfuscating the truth. This is known as programmer bias, which Alphabet has in spades.

Yes, both USAID and the NED have funded organizations involved in counter-disinformation and media literacy initiatives in Brazil. However, the nature and intent of this funding are viewed very differently depending on the political perspective. [1, 2, 3]
Supporters and the agencies themselves frame these programs as efforts to defend democratic processes and combat election interference. Conversely, critics and right-wing political figures argue that the funding effectively built a system of censorship aimed at suppressing conservative speech. [1, 2, 3, 4]

🛡️ Verified Funding and Initiatives
Both agencies have financed projects that touch upon Brazil’s information and media landscape:
  • National Endowment for Democracy (NED): The NED has explicitly supported anti-disinformation programs in Brazil. For instance, it funded the Instituto Tecnologia e Equidade (IT&E), which conducted workshops for journalists and local electoral authorities ahead of the 2020 municipal elections to combat digital falsehoods. The NED also allocated grants to groups like the Fundação Fernando Henrique Cardoso for projects aimed at lowering anxieties around voting and public discourse. [1, 2]
  • USAID: USAID has funded broad global and regional media development programs, fact-checking ecosystems, and organizations like the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab), which track digital disinformation trends in Latin America. [1, 2]

No doubt it involves paying down the debt with inflated dollars. Kind of hard to do when you don't even touch the principle and interest on the debt is rising.

Artificially pump GDP and outrun the debt?

And to a staunch ally to boot.

I don't know which is the bigger factor here - - the fact that he's insane or the reality that he's a miserable excuse for a human being.

If Trump can pull this off I'll take back all the nasty things I've said about him.

Policies, right?
