I think you are absolutely correct in that the graph is substantially about Trump, not the USA. I think a more interesting graph would be to show that graph in terms of male and female instead of by political party. That would be a bigger tell about what really is happening in the country.
it’s not just about country though. Many very smart people can’t handle Trump on an emotional level and have left the GOP because Trump! Such people are unable to distinguish Trump from the party or country.
That being said, I think there is a distinct and growing group in the USA who have, or are in the process of, emotionally detaching from America. Perversely, while these people parade under the banners of a non-existent Palestine or Mexico, while burning the Stars and Stripes, it is what the American Flag stands for that allows them to do that. In most of the world these people would be rounded up and put in a gulag. My guess is these are people who are pre-disposed to attachment problems because of their individual backgrounds. Thus we get unruly mobs, gangs, etc.
@bradstevens I get it, and hesitated for reasons you allude to, but I don't think there's an equal comparison to be made in American history, and think the fervor DJT's backers have for him is more closely paralleled by AH's than anyone else I can think of. Perhaps, Obama's in terms of size and loyalty, but I don't think his supporters had the nationalistic angle that DJT's share with him you choose not to name. Make Germany Great Again, could almost be lifted from AH's speeches and approach. I'd say there are a lot of parallels in their appeal and approach. What American or world leaders would you compare DJT to in terms of loyalty, approach, etc...?

Andrew Jackson is a perfect comparison for Trump. Andrew Jackson was decidedly not Adolf Hitler.
But that would require knowing more history than Hitler = Bad.
@carramrod Maybe, that was a lot of History class ago, but I know AJ had very high popularity amongst the rank and file. My guess is a greater % than DJT. The parallel wasn't between DJT and AH, I was referring to the stridency of their supporters and the fact that both groups promoted nationalistic pride.
I am a very proud American, but I'm unaffiliated (happened well before Trump; mostly when the RP cozied up to the religious right), so I wouldn't show up in the Repub #s. I would guess the % of unaffiliateds who were formerly Repub would track a higher % as proud Americans than unaffiliateds who were formerly Dems.

I know this might just be a small sample size, but any chance there could be a correlation between those that are vets and their families being more proud? It seems like a resounding yes and they probably skew more Pub as well. I know I’m reaching here… As I said probably doesn’t affect enough people for said results, or could it?
