because I feel it highlights the difference in the two political parties the way nothing else can. Democrat's are much more disdainful and embarrassed of the country in which they reside and their feelings about the country are more strongly tied to the political situation of the current day.

ie. They're overly emotional.

@unclemark One of the lessons I've learned in life is to never be an early adopter. You pay a premium for a nascent and inferior product.

You're not old enough to get in early on anything.

It's an interesting issue. If you're not happy with what your country is doing, how do you answer that type of question?

I'm also not convinced that you can take for granted that the group of people of whom 90%+ are "very" proud of the accident of their birth aren't the ones who are overly emotional. I think that graph may or may not say something, but it's unlikely it says what OP thinks it says.

It’s not that deep. No need to pretzel your brain into some “Republicans are nativists and Democrats are self-critical” logic.

Broadly speaking Democrats are less proud to be American. Broadly speaking Democrats satisfaction with being an American is more tied to whether they hold political power at the moment.

And yet self-identified independents, who tend to vote Republican, more closely track the Dems on this measure. So color me unimpressed by whatever point you think you're making.

What about the Independents, though, that follow the Dem line more than the GOP one?

@carramrod I guess this graph shows who's burning the country to the ground, like they did a couple of years ago, and plan to do again this weekend?

That graphic doesn't mean chit to illustrate the difference between the parties or the division in the country. The republican party is 1 man now, so naturally those who identify as republican, are proud, because their man is in charge. Can you guess at the results if you'd done a similar graphic among Nazis in 1938?

Republicans are what? 25-30% of the country? Mostly older people and certainly very emotional.

Looks like the other 70% have followed the same general trend line.

@kkott A good rule of argument or discussion:  as soon as you are going to make a Nazi comparison, stop, and think about it a little bit.
