This is a good start. The government should get out of all college loans and turn it over to the markets.
@snarlcakes very interesting. will piss brad off. i'm not sure what to think of it. hell the mayor of the largest city in america has a degree in african studies. i think the bankruptcy court should allow for discharge under certain conditions. i don't know what i think about the gov deciding what it will or won't fund. i don't know.

Anytime we can piss Brad off it's a win. I think it's beneficial to all parties. Allowing an 18 year old to take out 100k+ loan to major in queer studies is unfair to the 18 year old as well.
@snarlcakes colleges will be interesting I think the next decade in light of AI etc.
I think it doesn't go far enough. Student loans shouldn't even be a thing. Going into debt on the theory that you'll end up with the ability to pay it off in the future, even though, what, 50% of students don't even graduate? We should have a lot more scholarships, but far fewer loans. Still have opportunities for poorer students, but make them competitive.

Bad solution to a legit problem. My approach (stated numerous times) it to 1) limit all loans to the tuition that an in-state student would pay and room & board in a dorm, and 2) make student debt bankruptable, but put the colleges on the paper for the first 10% (or whatever %) of any default amount.

I think Trump's proposal is better than status quo. Not surprisingly my preferred option is the let free markets work.
I'd be open to both of your ideas as long as colleges were on the hook for a high enough percentage of defaults. Someone has to have skin the game.
College education is definitely overrated. Getting rid of government loans for college entirely is a first step followed rapidly by no more funding universities with government money altogether. Let universities operate under market forces. Let individuals channel the power of AI.
We should have a system of public subsidies for all kinds of post high-school education. Even those who want to become HVAC techs. Such people are a lot more important than those who go to college and take classes from Stoner in medieval literature. (Bookclub inside joke here).
Im also a fan of the arts and I would have no objection to subsidizing training in those fields.
We throw tons of money at education in this country and we get very little return. The whole field needs to be tightened up.
@co-hoosier and at COH U there will be a return to the Socratic method!!!
It's all a scam.

@dbmhoosier eh it's like anything else. go get a degree in poly sci, psychology, english, marketing, history, blah blah blah good luck. you go get a nursing degree you'll have a job the next day with a signing bonus. become a PA make a couple hundred grand plus a year. engineers etc. i think for myriad reasons the time for a degree for personal edification is over unless you've got a trust waiting for you or you're a hot enough chick that it isn't going to matter anyway as your career marital earnings will eclipse most professions.
all these nailpounder gigs sound great out of the gate but they've got issues. most don't pay shit for quite a while. and many only if you own the business. what's more you're one herniation away from being cooked. and if you haven't socked enough away by 50 to throw in the towel you've got some long days with a beat up body

Exactly. The government shouldn't be subsidizing worthless degrees. If you want to go that route provide your own financing.
A strong argument can be made that student loans put more people into poverty than they lift out at this point.

I agree. Instead of loans, we should aggressively fund public support for higher education that is both means-tested and merit-based. And it should not favor just classic areas of study, or just high-paying tech fields. It should cover two-year trade schools all the way through MFA programs.
