Anybody been to any good shows lately?

We just got done watching Umphrey's Mcgee, which is always good.  Wife wants to go to both nights of Dave, but I think I'll let her go with her friend Friday and join Saturday.

What has everybody seen?

But two groups I’ve never heard of. ( free tix). The Wood Brothers and St Paul and the Broken Bones….Sister went to Teddy Swims tonight and said he was really good. Not much going around this summer I’m interested in.

St Paul and the Broken Bones make good music.   No clue about their show though. The Wood Bros would be a great show if you're into roots and bluegrass. I'd go to that show in a heartbeat.  You could always fill the void with beers.

I saw MJ Lenderman a few weeks ago at the Egyptian Room, and Aimee Mann at the CMA Theater in Nashville TN about 2 weeks ago.  Both were very good.

If Lenderman pits together another good album or two, his show will be amazing.  It drags a little in the second half as is, as it goes a bit noise/shoegaze once he burns through all the bangers on his latest album.

If you were a fan of Medeski, Martin and Wood you’ll definitely like this iteration.  I saw them years ago at the Vogue and they were solid.

ive been pretty underwhelmed with the shows coming to Indy this summer.  I suppose the exception would be a Built to Spill/Yo La Tengo show at the new Fishers  venue.  I took my daughter to BTS last summer at the HI-Fi Annex and don’t feel a great need to go this year (must be getting old).

Thinking about going over to Hamilton, Ohio (I think that's where it is) to see The Revivalists and Andy Frasco and his band.  If anyone gets a chance to see Andy Frasco play, it's one of the best shows I've ever seen.  I've never seen a band where in a song, every band member plays some else's instrument, and then continues to switch throughout.  Plus, his piano top literally raises and lowers while people stand on it.

Really good time.

Dave on Saturday (meh, but tix were free)

Head & the Heart at Iroquois Amphitheater in Louisville on the 19th for wifey.

I’m looking forward to pre concert meals (Bonge’s Saturday & LeMoo next Saturday) more than the shows themselves…

Went to Merlefest in April and it was amazing. 4 days of good musicians, music and fun. It is a bluegrass festival, but they try and expand out as much as possible. One of the best performances was an all-star group they do every year where they pick an album and play cover to cover. This year it was Let it Bleed, plus a few extra songs from that era. That was outstanding. Other bands I really enjoyed: Leftover Salmon, Bonnie Raitt was amazing (not just at her age, but amazing. Woman oozes cool), War and Treaty, John R Miller, Cleverlys, The Dead South, Steven Wilson Jr (IN boy!), Donna the Buffalo... and others I'm forgetting.

Thinking about getting lawn seats to Sundays Leftover Salmon, Kitchen Dwellers and Infamous Stringdusters.

Saw Billy Strings again a couple months ago, and he was terrific again. Great energy and GD vibe to his shows and pre-show.

PS: I'm eager to see the Wood Bros again. Thought they were terrific.

Recently saw Jackie Venson for the 2nd time in a bar..  1st time in the Paramount Theater in Austin over a year ago.     I can watch her over and over.  she has a lot of stuff on you tube but has recently required a $5 per month for much of it.  Below is the Paramount concert.

About a month or so ago I saw Caamp at the Salt Shed in Chicago. I'm not a huge Caamp fan, but really enjoyed their show. The Salt Shed is a pretty amazing place to see a show. I'd highly remember Caamp and the Salt Shed.

Back in May I took my daughter to see Fontaines DC. I absolutely love that band. Personally, I think they're the best active/'new' band out there.

I also just saw Paul McCartney announced a bunch of US fall dates. I might go see him in either Columbus, Pittsburgh or Chicago. I think he plays Chicago the last two nights of the tour - since he's 83, this might be my last chance to see him. My take is that it's Lennon and McCartney and then everyone else.

@ohio-guy How do you square your Lennon admiration with his monstrous personal life?

Personally, I find him kinda overrated, but still like his Beatles era. Tough to admire him, though, given his past.

I'm pretty sure I know what you're getting at, but I wouldn't characterize his personal life as monstrous. The Beatles are hands down my favorite artists of all time; that said, I do look at them as all individually as a sum of their parts. I don't turn a blind eye to the way John reportedly treated women, but I do think overall he was a net positive on music and the world in general.

@ohio-guy   Lennon beat women (not "reportedly"--he admitted it) and abused his own son. He mocked disabled people. He beat a man nearly to death for joking that he might be gay.

What would you call it?

I'm not really interested in excusing his behavior, but most all that happened when he was a teen and in his early 20s. I don't know that I'd say he abused Julian Lennon - and Julian doesn't ever really make that claim - but he definitely did get the raw end of the stick.

John Lennon was himself a tortured soul - his father wasn't around and his mother was killed when she was hit by a car when he was in his early teens - I think he had a lot sh!t to work through and he worked through it.
