Need to get this sucker started up again. I’ll start.

Do not go to rap-related events.
I'm sure it will be a mostly peaceful 4th of July weekend in the windy city.

Because what is the one thing this generation needs? More diagnoses!
If they can identify one future school shooter and get him help prior to going off, it’s worth it.Like this:

@bradstevens maybe that happens. What definitely happens is more kids getting strung out on prescriptions and being coddled on account of their “mental health” difficulties.
All these shooters are on SSRI’s anyway.
We share a skepticism of the medical establishment’s frequent prescription of antidepressants and adhd meds to children.@bradstevens maybe that happens. What definitely happens is more kids getting strung out on prescriptions and being coddled on account of their “mental health” difficulties.

I think we differ on the value we place on mental health and treatments in general.
@bradstevens mental health is important even if painfully amorphous. I just think the prescriptions and therapy for the most part are quite literally the opposite of what you want people engaging in for better mental health. The drivers of poor mental health are all quite patently obvious and don’t require therapeutical intervention to address.
I think you’ve cited the work of Abigail Shrier before. That’s great.
She is however, quite literally the opposite of 90% of mental health professionals you would take your kid into see.
Mental health professionals all know the value of resilience and talk about it. Kinda like teachers. But I agree with you that many don’t know how to help cultivate it. Much like with raising children, it’s a very tough balancing act between being warmfully supportive and a realistic mirror. In my experience, that’s even harder with girls.@bradstevens mental health is important even if painfully amorphous. @bradstevens resilience sure. I think that pretty much all mental health failures stem from physical choices.
Exercise or no?
Eat well or no?
Refraining from drugs or no?
Keep a busy calendar or no?
10 hours a day on a phone or no?
Constant human physical connection or no?
The last three are probably to most important. Free time being used outside the physical world is the largest contributor to poor mental health. Or not being busy in general.
All of that was free. Didn’t even need to pay someone with a social work degree $100 a hour for it.
If mental health is the output and the physical world is the input, then focus needs to remain on optimizing the inputs.
All of this is wrt to people having mental health challenges who aren’t actually mentally ill. Obviously there are real examples of mental illness and trauma that the above might not be adequate for.

Meet Frederick Douglass High School on the West side of Chicago. Still open. 33 students in the entire school. Spending per kid: $68,000.
