@arthur-dent How many watch Guyfeld? He wins the ratings battle.
While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon
I never found Colbert funny. He was OK on the Daily Show back in the day, I guess. Kimmel, by contrast, is funny and still very anti-Trump.
Kimmel is funny? He was the most boring guy on The Man Show and that was his peak.
At least Fallon has some talent IMO.

Agree 100%. Fallon is the only one that's watchable.
I thought Furgeson was great. I really appreciated his sense of humor and how he got in with the guests. Didn't seem as rehearsed as a couple of the others.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

Colbert is funny. Not as funny as he used to be, because he's become repetitive, but he's still funny. If the show is losing money, it's not Colbert's fault, it's CBS's.
CBS is unwilling to lose millions in advertising revenues over the next 3.5 years.
As always, it's all about the Benjamins.

CBS called The Late Show cancellation a “financial decision,” and there is evidence to back that up.
Data from Guideline shared with ADWEEK noted that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! combined for around $404 million in linear TV ad revenue in 2018. That dropped by half to around $200 million in 2024. Meanwhile, The Late Show had around $121 million in linear TV ad spend in 2018; however, it had around only $70 million total in 2024, a decline of 42% per the data.
The Measure noted that, so far this year, brands have spent an estimated $32.2 million in advertising on The Late Show. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon are higher, taking in over $50 million each. Some of that comes down to Kimmel having more commercials overall, with The Late Show featuring more network promos.
The shows also come at a steep cost. Hosts like Colbert and Fallon reportedly make more than $10 million per year, and Puck reported today that The Late Show was losing $40 million per year.
Leno several years ago had a great line about Colbert, Kimmel et al and the demise of late night shows: “When the audience claps at your jokes instead of laughing, you have a problem.”
CBS can claim “financial reasons” all they want, but we all know Colbert’s content was the problem and the reason for financial problems.
Colbert just isn't a funny liberal and he wasn’t fun to watch. Gutfeld in comparison is obviously conservative, but he has fun with his schtick.

That high cost is interesting. In the last years of Big Bang, the 6 main actors made over $1 million per episode. There were 24 episodes. So that is $144 million in salary for stars, let alone costars and the like. Now BBT had far better ratings. But it strikes me that in cost, Colbert making $15 million for maybe 150 episodes is a helluva deal compared to what they spend on regular programming. Celebs make money appearing, but it is minimal, maybe $1000.
A large part of all of Late Night is to be a place stars from that network show up and pitch their programs. Of course they have movies and athletes and others, but to an extent their shows are infomercials for the networks. Sometimes they show cross network, CBS stars on NBC, but not usually.
CBS as a whole has an older audience. First, tv as a whole is older viewing. Second, shows like NCIS skew older. Maybe they want to rebrand as younger. Advertisers like younger, but older does tend to have more money.
TL:DR Colbert's $15 mil sounds like a lot, but compared to standard programming that are paid on approximately 20 episodes compared to 150 or so, it probably isn't. Also part of his job was not to make money but be a CBS cheerleader.

does the younger generation really want to watch or care about CBS? None of the Millenials I know watch basic TV routinely, let alone the late shows. The group below them definitely isn’t watching either based on anecdotal evidence.
@jdb nope, they don't watch CBS, or even tv. Tv is an old person thing, but CBS even moreso.
Maybe if they give Mr Beast a show. But Food Network tried giving Rhett and Link a show and based on how long it lasted GMM fans did not follow.
Interesting. I’ve seen the internet rumors that Trump demanded it. I thought salary might be a plausible counter. I don’t buy the rumors. Just because I don’t know the answer doesn’t mean there is some dark conspiracy at play. Admittedly, with salary, I don’t really know what the answer is.
You'll likely find the "why" at the intersection of the following:
Broadcast TV is a relative dinosaur
The "Late Night Shows" on Broadcast TV are the dinosaur within the dinosaur.
They all will likely go away, and somebody had to go first.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

I think that is probably it as much as anything. It isn't that Colbert IS losing money, it is there will be a point he is.
But it all shows how easy conspiracies are. CBS is sued and pays out, CBS is merging with a conservative company, a liberal is fired while being highly rated. Easy pickings.

Very true. Is it financial? Is it political? Everyone wants to impute motive when we don’t know all the details.
It’s just as possible the new heads of CBS met with Colbert, realized he was an effete, whiney cunt. And decided to shit can his ass for personal reasons.
Yeah, broadcast TV has a lot of problems now, but manny of those problems are self- inflicted. They take themselves way too seriously. Colbert, in his dark suits, looks like Richard Nixon trying to tell jokes. His arrogance is palpable as he pretty consistently implies he is wiser and smarter than conservative rubes. There is a reason why gutfeld wears golf shirts and sweatshirts and his set is very well-lit, and some of his regulars always make fun of him.
