we didn’t have lawn chairs but I can’t count the number of times my little league team rode in the bed of a pick up truck going 55-65 down a country road.  Bumping up out of it like you were going to fly out. Good times.

@bar-down then look over and scream out, "dad, when's snack?"

My god.

The best was when I coached t ball.  I had this one kid that never ran the bases right.  He'd hit the ball, run to third, sometimes still with the bat in his hands.  Sometimes it would make it to the outfield where some kid on the other team was doing cart wheels.

T-ball was great. We were champs. I only got called out once. And it was bullshit. Dude tagged me with an empty glove while the ball was in his other hand, and then he moved it. Problem was, second base umpire was my dad, and he didn't see it clearly, so he had to call it for the other guy. I balled like a little bitch in the dugout for like an hour. I'm pretty sure I got ice cream after the game to make up for it. Also a pack of Topps that happened to have Ryne Sandberg in it. Probably still have that card somewhere.

I'll never forget playing against one of my best friends in major leagues (12U).  We had parents umping the bases and he got called out at first on a bang-bang play by his dad and he threw the worst fit I have ever seen him throw in his life.  Typically chill dude, but he went off.  Took his helmet off. Actually threw it at his dad. We were all stunned.  His dad just turned his back and walked away like a pro. I think that set him off even more.  His coach had to literally pick him up and carry him off the field.

When I was in little league, my oldest and one of my best friends to this day were on different teams.  We both were pitchers, he happened to be starting that day against us.  First plate appearance up, I roped a double to right center.  Maybe had a RBI, probably not, we weren't good at all.  The only hit I had that day, think I went 1-3 or something like that against him, could have been 1-4.

A couple innings go by and the kid we had throwing used up all his pitches for the day so they brought me in.  Second batter up, my friend.  Had his parents, who were my second family, heckling the hell out of me.

1st pitch went right between his shoulder blades.  I didn't throw it hard, enough that he wasn't gonna get out of the way.  His dad immediately yelled for him to rush me, he didn't.   All he did was look at me and asked why?  Told him there was no way he was going to get a base hit off me when i hit a double earlier.

Only time we faced each other as pitchers.  He's lucky, I would have blasted him again.

@bradstevens daughter is life guarding this summer. She’ll have it all this summer

I lifeguarded for 7 summers in a row, and never saved a single person. But, that's comes with lifeguarding at a fancy country club where everyone knew how to swim. I even did it during the summers when I had a second, more substantial, job.

Oh, and a big perk was playing golf for free every Monday. That was pretty sweet given that I was lifeguarding at Inverness Club in Toledo - the home of four US Opens, two PGA Championships, etc. (and home of the 2045 US Open). I had no idea how good I had it back then.

Had I stayed in Toledo, I think I would have benefited greatly from the connections I made there. And I learned a lot about people from that job. Such as, some of the nicest people in the world were the ones that drove to the club in their Rolls-Royce while the biggest assholes were the ones who stretched a bit join, but couldn't possibly buy a Rolls. Also, the behavior of the kids typically mirrored that of their parents. Hell, being a lifeguard at a place like that was largely equivalent to being a nanny. Wish I could spend one more summer doing it.

@boogie that’s hilarious!!!  We actually had a kid on our team who could really pitch. Ended up a D1 Qb.  Hell of an arm.  Anyway it was raining so we practiced in the gym. Fckr hit me in the ribs with a fastball. Spooked me. Ever since I stepped in the bucket and was worthless at the plate. The embarrassment was only made worse by the constant dugout ridicule from my friends bc my aluminum bat was bright purple and read the entire length of it FENCE FINDER

All is well.

And my wingman is not yet excited for the World Cup. I think he's mostly just mad that FC Cincinnati doesn't have another game until mid-July. I might have to take him to one of the local breweries to watch a USMNT match. I think he wood love that atmosphere.

@noodle he’d definitely be hyped. Things will fire up once the games start. I think prices took the initial air out of the excitement but it’ll get going

@bar-down I just ordered him a USMNT scarf. He likes to wear those even when watching at home, so maybe it will help get him more excited. Of course it will annoy my wife a bit as she is most definitely not a soccer fan. I also bought him a vintage England jersey when I was in London a few weeks ago. So that might give us a backup team

@noodle

My son was a life guard for a summer at an Indian Reservation near Albuquerque.  One of his college buddies grew up there and was pool manager.  As near as I can tell, everything and everyone was the exact opposite of what you described at the club.  But he said it was a lot of fun.

What was your best summer/part-time job in high school and what did you learn or how did it serve you?

Four summers steel mills.  2 summers Dunes State Park.  One summer at a little amusement park.  Only thing I learned was none of that appealed to me as a career.  Pay was always pretty good though.

USMNT better score goals. Too many turnovers and generally shitty back line.
