The summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college, I worked at a summer camp in Maine. Most of the counselors were midwest college guys who saw ads in their student newspapers, with a few Europeans thrown in to coach soccer, and all the campers were rich Jewish kids from New York, Boston, and Philly.
Went up a few weeks before the start date to set up the campgrounds (was actually one of the first 5 there), and it was cold AF in Maine in early June.

Just like that...except for no females.
We did drive down to Portland on a couple of nights off to go to the bar(s?) and hit on the locals. Drank Moosehead. One time, we stopped at a roadside trailer and got super cheap lobsters on paper plates, with plastic utensils, and sat at old, wooden picnic tables.
Which reminds me, saw an article the other day saying that lobster rolls were as high as $50 in Maine.
Thanks, Trump.
.
I want more stories about this kid! Sounds like he might be head guy of a PI outfit, with a Jet, by now.
I wish I had more stories about him. Or that I remembered his name. This was the mid-to-late 90s, so he'd have to be at least in his late 30s by now.

I did that within the last 10 years. Used to do a lot of work for LL Bean. The drive to and from their Freeport office and the airport in Portland had several places like that. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

@ohio-guy i coached soccer camps. first job. all through college. it was the only job i ever had until real jobs. all things considered it wsa kind of miserable. most of the kids didn't really want to be there. it was babysitting with a ball tshirts and cones
You have those kids that would sit on the field, picking dandelions, that would literally watch the ball slowly go by and have a look of disgust as the ball slowly rolled next to them?
Ahhh, those were the summers.
@bar-down then look over and scream out, "dad, when's snack?"
My god.
The best was when I coached t ball. I had this one kid that never ran the bases right. He'd hit the ball, run to third, sometimes still with the bat in his hands. Sometimes it would make it to the outfield where some kid on the other team was doing cart wheels.
One summer, early in HS, I thought it would be a good idea to ump little league baseball games.@bar-down then look over and scream out, "dad, when's snack?"

Nothing like getting cussed out by the mom of your best friend who had a younger sibling on one of the teams.

My daughter has played Challenger baseball for 12+ years. Every kid has some sort of disability and almost all have a cognitive/mental disability. You guys have no idea. LOL

state highway mowing crew
decent pay, low stress and a good tan
One of my really good friends from HS worked for the county highway dept one summer and his job was to go collect roadkill. Basically, drive around looking for buzzards that would signal something dead in the road, and answer the dispatcher when someone called one in. All he did was burn gas and and shovel something into the truck a couple of times/day.......

T-ball was great. We were champs. I only got called out once. And it was bullshit. Dude tagged me with an empty glove while the ball was in his other hand, and then he moved it. Problem was, second base umpire was my dad, and he didn't see it clearly, so he had to call it for the other guy. I balled like a little bitch in the dugout for like an hour. I'm pretty sure I got ice cream after the game to make up for it. Also a pack of Topps that happened to have Ryne Sandberg in it. Probably still have that card somewhere.
