@bar-down Son joined the tennis team, daughter finishing up senior year.
She had what we thought was a nice kid as a boyfriend for 7 months. Second one. Played piano. Into finance. Going to Michigan. She called him a NARP--non-athletic regular person, and really liked him. Hell, our whole family liked him. Jackass broke up with her about three weeks ago, three weeks before his prom that he invited her to. A week's worth of non-stop crying, sleeping in bed with mom, but now she's out of it. Looks like UIUC for the fall. She didn't want to go into debt for IU.
@bradstevens Cortez's kids are way into tennis along with a bunch of my other buddies. it's a game you can play for life. altho they need to figure out a way to get refs/officials etc. the calling your own outs is the most bizarre thing i've ever witnessed. if i played tennis instead of soccer i would have had endless drama.
congrats man. that's a smart kid. illinois is no joke for admissions/academics. become a big time smart school. in fact i have buddies from law school in chicago who are ill alums telling me that mizzou is becoming a very hot school in chicago because no one can get admitted to illinois
Its demographics have become crazy: 36% white, 25% Asian-American, 15% international--most of which, I'm guessing are Asian--so more Asians than whites. Like California schools or something.@bradstevens Cortez's kids are way into tennis along with a bunch of my other buddies. it's a game you can play for life. altho they need to figure out a way to get refs/officials etc. the calling your own outs is the most bizarre thing i've ever witnessed. if i played tennis instead of soccer i would have had endless drama.

I'm hear to tell you, it's not going to get any easier for you when it comes to her dating life.

Pickleball. That's where it's at.
@bradstevens What's the purpose behind that? To become like Michigan? Just raise its status? Through soccer I know a ton of metro east families. bunch played at iu. they don't even think about ILL anymore. it's so far out of reach. they go to Ill Springfield, which is the old sangamon state. naia soccer powerhouse that was a junior/senior college only. again be proud. that's a big time accomplishment for your daughter!
@larsiu speaking of demos like that. mo state has become a really competitive d1 soccer program. this coming year they will not have a single american on the roster. 28 internationals. what the hell are scott gallagher lou fusz and the rest selling? slu MIGHT have openings for 3 kids. lindenwood 3. mo state zero. umkc 3. so you have 15,000 parents paying for expensive club and at best a dozen openings at the d1 level. these clubs on their socials are promoting signings with jucos and d3 schools and schools i've never even heard of it. it's bizarre
@boogie buddy is an ortho and said it's the gift that keeps on giving. these slobs all of the sudden think they can play and are destroying themselves
They say fast food killed the automat, so this is just things coming full circle I guess.
Illinois is one of the worst run states in the country. Our debt is incredible. One result: UIUC gets about 10% from state funding, compared to some state flagships getting 30-40%. Where do they make up the revenue? Jacked up prices (UIUC is $38K in-state; $60-70K international COA) and more higher-paying internationals.@bradstevens What's the purpose behind that? What's crazy is, I already pay some of the highest taxes in the country, and yet, we still have a shell out for an in-state school. I should have raised my kids in Munster!
I should have raised my kids in Munster!
My brother raised two in Munster, both went to Purdue. So things could be worse for you.
@bradstevens Ha! But you do have a great in-state school. An elite in-state school. Kids here have to try for Wash U to get that level of education
@larsiu They are feeding the MLS academy here to some extent. What ultimately happens to those kids I'm not totally sure. USL today is about what MLS was in the 90s. MLS today has 78 different countries represented. Those kids from the academies aren't really ending up in the league.
Tennis? Lacrosse? Soccer?
Dodgeball is where it's at!
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
