Speaking of stupid, Butch. Biden was the first President, since Carter, to have a term where food inflation outpaced wage gains. It's impressive how bad Democrats are at governing.

So if those numbers held for another year, than Biden was the first president to see food inflation outpace wages since Trump, not since Carter, and the disparity was worse under Trump.

Not sure what you're looking at, but food inflation was very low during Trump's 1st term.
Quick comparison of recent full terms (using BLS data for food-at-home CPI and average hourly earnings of production/nonsupervisory workers, a standard long-running wage series)
• Biden (Jan 2021–Jan 2025): Food-at-home CPI ≈ +23%; wages ≈ +22%. Food edged ahead (real wages down modestly overall). @grok
• Trump (2017–2021): Food-at-home CPI ≈ +6–7%; wages rose substantially more (real wages increased). Wages clearly outpaced. wisconsinwatch.org politifact.com
• Obama (2009–2017): Food-at-home CPI ≈ +10%; wages ≈ +37%. Wages far outpaced.
• George W. Bush (2001–2009): Food-at-home CPI ≈ +26%; wages ≈ +29%. Wages slightly ahead cumulatively.
@snarlcakes All I did was plug in the same data sets from the original graph, and indexed them to each president's first day in office. Not sure why the numbers are so different. I'll get back into it later if I have time, see if I can find the discrepancy.
@snarlcakes I figured out the discrepancy. It's between the CPI, which uses urban prices only (up 6.5% under Trump 1) and the "all consumer units" survey, which includes rural data (up 20.5% under Trump 1). I have no idea why the difference between the two datasets would be so stark. Look at how dramatically they flip in the years prior to and shortly after Trump took office:
Edit: digging into it, it seems the all consumers survey tracks actual spending, not prices, and the dramatic increase might be explained by behavior, i.e., consumers shifting to fancier foods, more organics, etc. So it's not an ideal measure for inflation.

Say this not to defend our current president, but as an observation about all those presidents who happened to be in the Oval Office during periods of inflation.
