That’s not really the point. Spirit went bankrupt. Would Jet Blue have gone bankrupt had they acquired Spirit? Maybe, probably not.
It’s not the DOJ or FTC’s call. It is and should’ve been JetBlue’s. They don’t have a compelling consumer protection case with the other four major airline all now offering basic economy rates that rival budget carriers. There was no lack of competition.
Airlines have withstood oil shocks for decades. Acting like this is some novel Trump phenomenon is dumb. You raise prices and weather the storm. Only those with an extremely flawed business models crumble, a model that would have been improved with an acquisition.
