No, not exactly at all. Despite the war we had our lowest deficit since 2000 in FY 2007 at $163 billion. That was before the financial crisis which cannot be blamed on the President, really any President. We'd do cartwheels over that low of a deficit now. It's nearly $2 trillion this year and we have another month to go. There's plenty to criticize about Afghanistan, which most considered the "good war" at the time. For example, once we toppled the regime and OBL and Al Qaida was out of the country, we should have just let that miserable country (I've been there) figure it out and be ready to take out any regime that decided to protect Al Qaida again. I supported going into Iraq at the time too and, as usual, the military operation was very successful. Our mistake there was to dismantle the Iraqi Military and government and try to run it ourselves. Even so, that country is not a lost cause. I was there in 2011 to train military officers and it's night and day compared to Afghanistan, which is backward and even the officers are illiterate. It is actually a partner nation, and they buy stuff from us with their own funds. It's not a perfect partner, but Saddam Hussein's country wasn't a partner at all. We had more military in the region before that war than we have in it now because Iraq was as much of a threat to the region as Iran is now.
@bradstevens yes. This is the republicans the majority of Americans detest and why there’s never been another in the White House since bush. Cheney and all them are the worst of us

eh, we spent $2.6 trillion in today's money on the 2008 financial crisis and $6.1 trillion on Covid, with $300-$400 billion in fraud.
Lots about those times were reckless and wasteful but there also hasn't been a 9/11 since 9 / 11 Can't really put a price on that.

He failed to mention absolving Islam of blame and allowing millions of Islamists into the U.S.
Maybe, until Trump waged war with Iran.
Aside: Conveniently overlooks how many illegals Obama deported.
Trump is now far worse than the Bush Administration. Other than tightening the borders after the Biden cascade, Trump has checked all the wrong boxes under the cover of the usual conservative agenda. Any Republican candidate would have been better.
Trump’s destruction will be felt for generations.
@hhlurker Trump has been terrible but what the Republican Party of our parents stood for is so anachronistic to how people think today they wouldn’t get 50 million votes. Can you imagine trickle down and funding wars in the era of socialists

The only thing worse than Indiana's basketball run this century has been our Presidents. Bush was a disaster. Biden one of the worst of all time. Obama sucked balls. And Trump has been awesome with the immigration invasion, but it will be all for naught when the sh#t libs take back the Presidency in 28 because he decided to fight the Persians. Not one f#cking President can do a damn thing right that matters. I hate governments.
While it's easy to point @ one side or another of the political aisle and blame, I reckon it's deeper than that. It's both an underlying and overarching distrust of our government, our societal institutions, that has led us to this place. And how could we be blamed for that? Of the 12 Presidents from Kennedy forward, we've had more assassination attempts than can be counted on one hand. Between hot and cold wars, we've literally been on a war footing for at least part of every decade we've all been alive. We've seen the markets crash multiple times, recessions and depressions, been targets of dozens of terror attacks both @ home and abroad. We have every media outlet from every political bent on every medium trying to scare us on the daily, 24/7/365. TPTB play us all against each other from left and right and the middle using every tactic they can to keep that power. And all the while individually some see the gamesmanship and are rightly concerned, but collectively we are oblivious well past the moment for something substantive to be done about it.
I am not only angry, ashamed and disgusted by the state of the world we will leave behind for the following generations...but also simultaneously angry, ashamed and disgusted by the generations who will inherit it.

I think a lot of you are downplaying the Bush Administration's squandering of political goodwill and unity here and across the globe among western nations. We had a real chance to build something, to correct course, to ask and get national sacrifice in the name of a greater good. Instead, Bush focused on making sure everyone kept buying and traveling, etc. and chose a completely unnecessary war against Iraq. In doing so, he turned a large part of the world against us when everyone's instinct was to be in solidarity with us.
Re the economy, Bush admin was in office for 8 years. They aren't responsible, at all? I'm sure you apply the same reasoning to Obama and Trump . . .
Re the deficit, look at the debt. Bush is not the only one, but one of many (mostly Republicans--lol at "fiscal conservatives") who had the national debt double during their tenures:
Trump doesn't have the Iranian problem without the Iraq War.Maybe, until Trump waged war with Iran.

For those of you on here who backed the Iraq war at the time--it's not about you being right. It's OK to admit you're wrong. Nobody blames you. You're inconsequential. This is about viewing what happened and what was lost with clear eyes.
We don't have 20-20 hindsight and we're not time travelers. Backing the Iraq war at the time given all that we knew and thought we knew (for example our intelligence services and those of most of the world assessed that Saddam had WMD) was a justifiable decision. In fact, most of Congress and Americans at the time backed that decision. The military execution was nearly flawless; the problem was how we handled the aftermath of the military victory. Of course, if we knew then what we know now, we would have had different opinions and if we invaded, we'd have done many things differently. Beating ourselves up over something that cannot be changed is a dumb exercise.
