@larsiu horrific coaching. You can’t sit with that much time left. Not against Messi. You have to keep playing

Tuechel had a great game plan right up to the point where they scored.  England were attacking and Argentina didn't have the speed on the flanks to deal with Rogers and Gordon.  Good decision to start those two guys out wide.  Kane offered nothing and was basically playing Frank Lampard box to box but offering ZERO in the attack.  England's opportunities came out wide, which is fine I suppose but must get more from a striker.

Playing catch in the second half and going to 5 defenders was Stoke City 101 and took away the mentality that got England the goal.  If you are going to lose, let them lose by attacking.  Up 1-0 Argentina was pressing and England should have been able to tear them to shreds down the flank.  Except England didn't because they played catch for 30 minutes.

Terrible coaching decisions to let greatest player in history have the ball continuously in the final third.  Naive, stupid and 100% the reason why England lost.  Messi has all the time in the world to hit that cross, and he can hit that cross on a dime 95 out of 100 times with all the space he was provided.

Ollie Watkins should have started the game.  He can play two ways and he is a threat.

It really does make you wonder how the hell Argentina have any chance against Spain. I can't imagine Argentina are going to press them which means you are purely a counter attacking team. As you note, Argentina isn't known for their speed. I think England would have had a better chance against Spain b/c they have pure speed up top (assuming Watkins over Kane which would have been a shocking, but probably tactically sound, decision in a WC Final).

Messi can't press at his age. But he can flip the field on a dime in a counterattacking gameplan. Should be interesting.

@larsiu

Spain failed to score against Cape Verde (granted an underrated squad) so clearly some teams match up better against Spain. For France it was a match-up nightmare.

Spain has the speed and ball control but do they have the creativity to finish against Argentina? Messi et al have the creativity to finish but  can they penetrate that deep often enough?

@larsiu watch the run where he gets fouled. Too strong for Kane to knock off the ball. Nuts the next guy. Then as he’s preparing to go around the last guy he chips it a little to get by.  Him and iniesta are like nobody I’ve seen.  Ronaldinho didn’t even do that. How they can go full speed and with their move lift the ball a foot or so off the ground.  It’s nuts

He's precognitive on a football pitch. There is no one in any other sport I've seen be able to literally see the future. Maybe, MAYBE, Roger Federer in tennis. I've stopped asking how? and just focus on the art itself.

Earlier, posters were coming up with big, strong athletic basketball players to put on the soccer team (Lebron, etc).

Maybe this guy is more like Messi...

Maybe Steph Curry. Even then Steph is 6'2" and wayyyy more athletic than people give him credit for. Maybe Steve Nash?

So he ran fast, made a juke, and then kicked a ball?

Yeah, Antwaan Randle El could never do that.

@bradstevens it's the ball control.  not the jukes.  the touch.
