@goat for sure. I was just telling my partners it’s an incredible thing to watch Messi and this game and all that it attends and then cut to Alexi Lalas for analysis then throw it to Landon Donovan’s hair.
I might watch the final on the Spanish channel
@larsiu horrific coaching. You can’t sit with that much time left. Not against Messi. You have to keep playing
Also, why take Gordon out? Wouldn't it have been smarter to hedge their bets by dropping someone in the midfield? No chance for a counter-attack after that sub.
@bar-down I watched a couple of games in Spanish. Problem for me is my local Univision doesn't have an HD feed. It was like watching TV sports 15 years ago.
I am way more familiar with American football, but what I just saw from England seemed like an American Football team with a slim lead going into a prevent defense. Against Peyton Manning in his prime. With WAY too much time left.
this is brilliant and perfect and imo why we may never get there and why 400 million people might be a detriment
@socks-shorts-1-2-3-swish My dad used to say, "The only thing the prevent defense prevents is you winning."
And by "used to say," I mean every single game I watched with him over thirty years, at some point in the fourth quarter, those words would come out.
@bar-down Maybe soccer is better if the US never break through. Just about everything there is in this world, it seems like if we put our mind to it, we can be best at it just by overpowering everyone else with the most resources. Maybe it makes soccer special that it's immune to that.
@goat yeah but when you’re in it your perspective changes. I have a kid starting the journey
@bar-down If your little demon ever becomes a soccer star, the stories in the London Sunday tabloids are going to be epic.
@goat when he gets in the car after training our conversations go like this:
me: Slurpee time?!!!!!!
minion: Yes!!!!!!!!!
me: You played great buddy!! That second goal was magic!!!!
minion: You’re welcome.
🤔 I don’t think that’s really the response you want
Seemed like the England goalie was just making play after play, but at the end, everything was played at their end of the field. You knew eventually at least one was going in.
Oh my. England. This may be worse than the hand of God.
I obviously don't follow soccer, but when they mentioned on the broadcast that they were subbing defense for offense, I thought that was a bad move. They had to keep attacking, which was basically the exact opposite of what they were doing.
@larsiu horrific coaching. You can’t sit with that much time left. Not against Messi. You have to keep playing
Tuechel had a great game plan right up to the point where they scored. England were attacking and Argentina didn't have the speed on the flanks to deal with Rogers and Gordon. Good decision to start those two guys out wide. Kane offered nothing and was basically playing Frank Lampard box to box but offering ZERO in the attack. England's opportunities came out wide, which is fine I suppose but must get more from a striker.
Playing catch in the second half and going to 5 defenders was Stoke City 101 and took away the mentality that got England the goal. If you are going to lose, let them lose by attacking. Up 1-0 Argentina was pressing and England should have been able to tear them to shreds down the flank. Except England didn't because they played catch for 30 minutes.
Terrible coaching decisions to let greatest player in history have the ball continuously in the final third. Naive, stupid and 100% the reason why England lost. Messi has all the time in the world to hit that cross, and he can hit that cross on a dime 95 out of 100 times with all the space he was provided.
Ollie Watkins should have started the game. He can play two ways and he is a threat.
Shoving carrramrod into a locker since 2024.
